Bertram Guy Blevens

March 18, 1923 — July 17, 2018

Bertram Guy Blevens, 95, of Louisville, passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2018.

Bert, aka "Pa" to his grandchildren, was a retired engineer with a heart of gold.

One of five brothers, Bert had a modest upbringing, in his childhood having only two pairs of pants to his name. He explained that “you wear one, you wash one, and you’re always ready to go.” Through his perseverance and brilliance as an engineer, Bert accomplished much in his lifetime, the fruits of which he used to selflessly care for and support his family. Despite his success, he never lost his spirit for taking life as it comes and making the best of it.

In love, Bert was always rich. He met Evelyn Thomas, and that was it. She sent him off to war in 1943 with a bracelet that read “Hands off this guy belongs to me,” and that he did. They wed in 1946 and enjoyed 70 years of marriage until Evelyn’s passing in 2016.

Bert served his country proudly in World War II, returning home with a Purple Heart and a Silver Star for helping fellow soldiers get to safety. He wouldn’t talk much about the war, but at the mention of it, his eyes watered.

For someone who often stayed quiet and let others speak, there is much to say about Bert … He loved fresh flowers, playing the harp, and Johnny Carson reruns. Whether something was broken or not, he fixed it. His culinary tastes were of the ‘unique’ variety – homemade yogurt mixed with raisin bran or biscuits and gravy, Breakfast of champions. Jalapenos eaten straight from the gallon jar, a delicacy. Bert was a jokester, and found humor everywhere that he could. His impish grin and laughing eyes were with him all of his days, and will be remembered fondly.

And his bike riding! Bert rode his bicycle almost every day, having logged well over 250,000 miles. He slowed in pace and mileage in his later years, yet at the age of 90 still made a 1,000-mile trek from Louisville, KY to Siesta Key, FL. About the ride he said “It really isn’t any great big deal.” But it was a big deal, and so was Bert.

Bert will be met in heaven by his beloved daughter, Lynn, and his wife Evelyn, both of whom will welcome him home with the loving chiding that is the Blevens family signature. Bert will take his place hand in hand with Evelyn in heaven, and on earth will remain forever more in the hearts of his family and friends. They will remember and strive to emulate one of Bert’s best pieces of advice: "If something comes up, try it. The worst thing you can do is fail, and that's not a catastrophe. What the heck. Give it a try." Bert Blevens was proof that if you live by this motto, you will never have failed in the end.

Bertram was preceded in death by his parents, Harry S. and Estella Blevens; brothers, Bevel and H.S. Blevens; and daughter, Lynn B. Ruth. He is survived by his brothers, Dale and Pete Blevens, his son, Kim Blevens (Vicki); daughter, Beth Blandford (George); grandchildren, Devon and Spencer Blandford, Gwen, Eric and Kyle Blevens, Alicia Laubheimer (Tony), and Michael W. Ruth; great-grandchildren, Kali Laubheimer and Michael Ruth.
