Richard Franklin Fendley, Sr.

December 10, 1939 — November 12, 2017

Richard Fendley, Sr., 77, entered into rest on Sunday, November 12, 2017.

Richard was born, to the late Donald and Laura McCulloch Fendley, Sr., on December 10, 1939 in Eatonton, Georgia. Growing up in Eatonton, Richard graduated from Putnam County High School where he played and excelled in football. Following graduation, he attended South Georgia College and played football under the legendary Coach Bobby Bowden. Richard continued his education and received his Masters’ degree in Education from Samford University in Alabama. Richard began his teaching and coaching career at Columbus High School and later transferred to Lanier High School in Macon. His career would continue to take him across the state of Georgia as a teacher, head coach and athletic director of Cherokee County High School in Canton and Baldwin County High School in Milledgeville. Richard made Warner Robins High School his final home in 1973, when he took his last role as teacher and coach before later becoming head coach and athletic director. He dedicated thirty years to Warner Robins High School and retired after over forty years of teaching and coaching football, track and tennis. Coach Fendley will always be remembered as a great man, teacher and coach and for the “Richard Fendley Relays” lovingly named after him. There was more to Richard than just football, a devoted family man; he enjoyed the time spent with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed reading, traveling, the outdoors, and he loved his coffee. Coach Fendley will be greatly missed by his family and his community.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Anthony Fendley.

His memory will forever be treasured by his adoring wife, Delores Adams Fendley; children, Jennifer Fendley Nash (Jamie) of Warner Robins, Richard Franklin Fendley, Jr., (Jan) of Bonaire, Matthew Paul Fendley (Emily) of Woodland, Alabama and Michael John Fendley (Tracy) of Bonaire; grandchildren, William Nash, Cole Fendley, Laura Fendley, Tyler Nash, Jaxson Jones, Madden Jones, Bella Fendley, Luke Nash and Blakely Fendley; siblings, Donald Fendley, Jr. (Gwen) of Martinez, Timothy Fendley (Amy) of Seneca, South Carolina and Marjorie Nipper (David) of Eatonton.
