Adelle J. Mize

November 9, 1916 — February 9, 2023

Adelle Jeanette Mize, longtime resident of Byron, Georgia passed away peacefully after breakfast Thursday morning, February 9, 2023, at the venerable age of 106 in San Antonio, Texas. She was the daughter and youngest child of the late Samuel Washington Ensley and Ida Lou Ensley. Her family gratefully acknowledges the loving care of staff at Esplanade Gardens and San Antonio Health & Hospice.

Born November 9, 1916, in Banks County, Adelle grew up on a real farm, where the work was hard, and the food was fresh. As a young woman she moved to Commerce and went to work at the Blue Bell Plant. There she discovered her love of fabrics, sewing and needlework.

As World War II began, Adelle found herself supporting the war effort in the production of soldier’s uniforms. She also found herself a husband, Vincent Dallas Mize, and started a family. Vincent enlisted in the Army, served in the 4th Infantry Division, landed at Normandy, and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. Thankfully he and his Purple Heart came home.

In 1949 the young family moved to Warner Robins to live in the Ziegler Apartments when Commercial Circle was the only business district in town. After the tornado of April 30,1953, Adelle and Vincent moved again, this time to Byron where they lived for more than 20 years.

As a gifted seamstress, Adelle made much of the family’s wardrobe on an old Singer sewing machine and by hand. Later in life, she developed a skillset for meticulous alterations of wedding gowns and military uniforms and her work was sought after and trusted.

Adelle was the family’s anchor, and with regular weekend trips to Grandma’s house, she never let the connection to our roots fade. She was a solid lady, instilling a strong work ethic and a love of learning in her children. She believed in preaching the Gospel and if necessary, using words.

Adelle loved nature, reading, animals, word puzzles, cross-stitching, flowers, square-dancing (she made the matching outfits), and cornbread. She grew to love the bluebells of Texas while living the last 16 years in San Antonio.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her daughter Virginia Mize, as well as her siblings*. She is survived by three sons, David Mize, James Mize, and Neal Mize and their wives along with 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
