Albert Lanier Hortman

Albert Lanier Hortman, born February 14, 1929, in Crawford County, Georgia, died at home December 6, 2009, after an extended illness.

He is preceded in death by his parents Robert E. Hortman and Lucile Delia Becham. He is survived by his wife, Doris Anita Bridges Hortman; daughters, Julie M. Shofstall (Steve), Chandler, Indiana, Laura L. Little (Chuck), Cochran, Georgia, Tina M. Perkins, Warner Robins, and Donna L. Cline (Dana), Lizella, Georgia; grandchildren, Heather Carter, Warner Robins, Jessica, John and Justin Shofstall, Indiana, Katelyn Cline, Lizella; brother, Mack Hortman, Macon, Georgia; and sisters, Gwendolyn King and Jeanette Ricks, Phoenix City, Alabama.

Al will be best remembered by many as the Shriner who carried a small child and her crutches becoming the symbol of what the Shrine stands for. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, where he received a Purple Heart. He retired from civil service at Robins Air Force Base, had his own pool business and worked at McCullough Funeral Home. He was a member of Al Sihah Temple, Jeffersonville Blue Lodge, and an honorary lifetime member of Hadi Temple in Evansville, Indiana. His church home was Northside Baptist Church in Warner Robins. Throughout his life, he believed in serving others.

Visitation will be Tuesday, December 8, 2009, from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 9, 2009, in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home, Reverends Loy Ballard and Tom Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Magnolia Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.
