Anna Jane Walker Smith

Anna Jane Walker Smith passed into the presence of Jesus on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 surrounded by family. Anna had been in the care of Abbey Hospice in Social Circle, Georgia.

Anna Jane Walker was born on May 12, 1928 in South Pittsburg, Tennessee to Wesley Trussell Walker and Annie Elizabeth Bratcher Walker. Later, her family relocated to Coral Gables, Florida. It was there she met and later married her husband, William L. "Bill" Smith.

Anna and Bill were married April 8, 1948 in Miami, Florida. They moved to Waco, Texas to pursue college at Baylor University. Upon his graduation, they traveled completing Bill's Air Force career, with their final station being Robins Air Force Base, Georgia in 1964, where they remained following his retirement.

Anna's college was interrupted with the birth of their children. She returned to college, completing her college education in 1970 at Georgia College in Milledgeville with a BS in Early Childhood Education. Upon graduation, Anna began her teaching career at Robins Elementary School and taught there until her retirement in 1997.

Anna was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, friend and teacher. Devout Christians, Anna and Bill served The Lord wherever the United States Air Force assigned Bill. She served in many capacities at her local church, Central Baptist Church in Warner Robins, most notably Kindergarten Sunday School, VBS, and ESL.

Anna was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Julie Smith Goethe; sister, Mary Ellen Rowe; and brother, W. T. "Dub" Walker, Jr.

She is survived by her children: William L. "Bill" Smith, Jr. (Jane) of Yorktown, Virginia, Ted Wesley Smith (Nita) of Warner Robins, Georgia, Sue Smith Edwards (Harold "Bubba") of Mansfield, Georgia, and Chris Goethe (Terri) of Marietta, Georgia. Anna is also survived by grandchildren: Stephanie Smith Piepho (Scott), Hillary Smith Mathews (Charlie), Analeigh Smith, Christianna Edwards Coffing (Matt), Amelia Edwards Vietri (Zach), Kelli Smith Biles (Paul), Daria Smith Ellison (Jason), Rachel Smith Lyons (Clay), Lawton Goethe, and William Goethe, Harold M Edwards, III (Ariela), Josh Hambrick, and David Hambrick; and by fourteen great-grandchildren.

Anna's family thanks the staff/caregivers/neighbors of Antebellum Grove for their care and kindness the past three years. Anna also received nurturing ministry from Central Baptist's Home Ministry. The family further thanks Abbey Hospice for the precious, gentle care given Anna in her final days.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 14, 2015 in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to the service. Friends and family are invited to a reception following the service at The Farmhouse at McCullough Funeral Home. Anna will be laid to rest at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 16, 2015 in Sequatchie Valley Memorial Gardens, Jasper, Tennessee.
