Betty Jean Stokes Maye Wilkes

January 9, 1926 — March 22, 2014

Betty Jean Stokes Maye Wilkes spent 88 years here on this earth living a life of service to others and following joyfully in Jesus' footsteps each and every day. On Saturday, March 22, 2014 she answered her most important call: Jesus called her home.

Betty lived life with passion, fun, and devotion to her God, her husbands, her children and her friends. Famed for her love of dancing, her homemade biscuits, her graham cracker crumb cake, her self-deprecating wit and her life-long faith, she will be missed ~ but those who know and love her realize that she is simply headed to her greatest adventure and reward. Comfort is found in knowing that Betty was prepared to leave us and that we who have not yet finished our life's' work must learn from the lessons that she taught, share the stories of her life, and realize that even death can have a grand and loving heart because it is only through death that we can truly go home.

Betty's life and Christian influence will forever be cherished by her children: Diane (Allen) Sheppard of Sandersville, GA, Calvin (Gail) Maye of Dillsboro, NC, David (Linda Gail) Maye of Warner Robins, GA. step son, James A. (Jean) Maye of Macon, GA and five much-loved grandchildren, numerous loving nephews and nieces and an adoring brother, Pete (Brenda) Stokes of Perry, GA.

Leading the way home before her were four wonderful and kind husbands: Robert E. Maye, father of her children, Winfred Norris who widened her world with travel, life-long friend Tilman Manning who loved her for loving his children, and Seabie Wilkes who needed her more than life itself as he walked the dark hallways of terminal cancer.

Betty was also preceded in death by her loving parents William David Stokes and Lucille Stokes as well as brothers; HL Stokes, Nathaniel Stokes, and Freeman Stokes and step-son, Billy Gene (Judy) Maye.

Visitation will be Tuesday, March 25, 2014 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home with Funeral Services following at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel. Interment will be held in Magnolia Park Cemetery following the services. Memorials may be given to Hospice Advantage 606 West Court Street, Wrightsville, Georgia 31096.
