Capt. Gerald Thomas Kersey, Usaf (Ret.)

October 31, 1939 — November 15, 2016

Gerald Kersey, 77, slipped into the arms of Jesus, his Savior on the afternoon of Tuesday, November 15, 2016.

Born and raised in Vero Beach, Florida, Gerald was a 1957 graduate of Vero Beach High School. He made the beautiful Patricia Young his bride on August 8, 1958, and soon after joined the United States Air Force. A 38-year Air Force Veteran, Mr. Kersey bravely served his country during the Cold War and retired as a Medical Officer with the rank of Captain.

Following his military career, Mr. Kersey expanded his love for the medical field into civilian life and worked for Brevard County Health Services in Florida and as a medical provider for the town of Boomer, North Carolina. He earned a Bachelor Degree of Medicine from the University of Nebraska and Master's Degree in Nursing from the University of Miami. After many years of helping people in medicine, Gerald and Patricia finally retired to Centerville, Georgia to be closer to the family he dearly loved.

Gerald truly lived for nothing but helping others and had a place in his heart especially for veterans. His deep passion to assist them resonated with U.S. Congress when they approved a medical device he created to support veterans with PTSD and depression.

In each community Mr. Kersey lived in, he was very involved in a local Baptist church; he enjoyed serving as Deacon and taught Sunday School. First Baptist Church of Centerville was his most recent church home.

Mr. Kersey was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Calvin and Margaret Porter Kersey; and his brother, Robert Eugene Kersey.

His memory will forever be treasured by his devoted wife of 58 years, Patricia Carol Young Kersey of Centerville; children, Catherine Sampson (Peter) of Centerville, Bonnie Varcoe (Peter) of Warner Robins, Gary Kersey (Yamini) of Indian Trails, North Carolina, and Brian Kersey of New Port Richey, Florida; grandchildren, Morgan, Noelle, Colin, Travis (Kelly), Zachary, Austin, Eric, Abbey, Rachel, Rebecca, and Calvin; great-grandchildren, Brayden, Kiera, Noah, and Rylee; siblings, Florence Weick of Tampa, Florida, Michael Kersey of Lyons, Georgia, James Kersey of West Palm Beach, Florida, and Rose Jones of Sumter, South Carolina; and a number of loving nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 4th at First Baptist Church of Centerville with visitation one hour prior to the service. Afterwards, Mr. Kersey will be laid to rest in Centerville Cemetery.

The family will accept flowers or donations may be given in memory of Gerald Kersey to the Baptist Children's Home, 354 West St., Ste 1, Valparaiso, IN 46383, baptistchildrenshome.org.
