Charles F. Tyler

September 14, 1924 — November 15, 2021

On the morning of Monday, November 15, 2021, Charles F. Tyler, age 97, joined his eternal companion, Louise Tyler, in Heaven. He was born on September 14, 1924, near Buena Vista, GA, to the late John F. and Carrie Johnson Tyler.

Charles’ family moved to Columbus, GA in the 1930’s where he graduated from Jordan Vocational High School in 1941. He then went to work at the former Brookley Air Force Base in Mobile, AL. In 1943, Charles joined the U.S. Navy during World War II and was sent to the South Pacific where he served as a Motor Machinist’s Mate (MoMM) 2nd Class and was a member of PT Boat 369. When the war ended in 1945, he came back to the United States. Charles left the Navy in 1946 and resumed work in Civil Service at Brookley AFB. In February of 1947, he married Mary Louise McKinley, who also worked on base. It wasn’t long before their first son, Greg was born with Gene and Cliff to follow.

In 1966, Brookley AFB was getting ready to shut down. The family moved to Warner Robins, so Charles could continue his Civil Service at Robins AFB. He bought a house on E. Imperial Circle where he and Louise lived ever since. For many, many years, Charles and Louise enjoyed being members of Evergreen Baptist Church. Charles took pride in serving as a former deacon there. Mr. and Mrs. Tyler eventually became members of Friendship Baptist Church where they loved worshiping for more than 20 years. Charles served as Treasurer for both Friendship Baptist and Rehoboth Baptist Association. He will be remembered by everyone who knew him as a devoted family man and Christian.

“Thank you, Dad, for being the great person you have been for so many years. We are glad that you will now be back with your wife, and both of you will be able to go to Heaven. We love you.”

In addition to his wife and parents, Charles was preceded in death by his sisters, Martha Helen Windham, Evelyn I. Schwartz and Alice Christian.

He is survived by his loving sons, Greg Tyler (Cynthia) of Northport, Alabama, Gene Tyler (Ellen) of Brownville, New York, and Cliff Tyler (Diane) of Bonaire; grandchildren, Fletcher, Jon, Kate, Chris, Alex, and Phillip; and great-grandchildren, Barrett, Carter and J.J.

Charles’ family will receive friends at McCullough Funeral Home on Thursday, November 18, 2021, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 19, 2021, at Friendship Baptist Church with Dr. Paul Cowles officiating.
