Clarence N. ("Duck") Channell, Sr.

September 27, 1923 — April 4, 2018

Clarence N. (“Duck”) Channell, Sr. of Kathleen, Georgia, formerly of Warner Robins, Georgia, passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at the age of 94. He was a hard working family man known for his exceptional physical strength and stamina. Mr. Channell always met friends and family alike with a warm, welcoming smile and personality. Over the many years, he was a lifelong avid fan of the Georgia Bulldog football teams and the Atlanta Braves baseball teams and reveled in the opportunity to watch their games whether on television or for live attendance. His family is grateful and blessed to have loved and been loved in return by such a wonderful human being.

Mr. Channell was born and raised in Greene County, Georgia. ”Duck,” as he was known to so many, worked his early years in Union Point, Georgia and Greensboro, Georgia and married Mae Ruth Sorrow in January, 1944. In 1951, “Duck” and Mae and their sons moved to Warner Robins, Georgia where he began his Civil Service career at Robins AFB. He served as an Engine Repair Mechanic in Aircraft Maintenance and later cross-trained and worked as an Electronics Mechanic in Avionics Maintenance. He retired in 1988 with 37 years of Federal Service.

Mr. Channell and his family became members of First United Methodist Church following baptism by the Reverend Carlton Carruth in 1957. One of his greatest enjoyments and activities was serving for many years as a baseball and softball umpire. He officiated for a variety of teams in the Middle Georgia Area from Little League to High School and College games. He was held in the highest respect for his exemplary knowledge and outstanding performance as an Umpire. As an avid fan and thirty-year supporter of his three sons during their athletic youth and throughout their collegiate years and later family lives, Mr. Channell delighted in the performance and acclaim of his sons.

Clarence N. Channell was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Mae R. Channell. He is survived by his son, Clarence N. Channell, Jr. (Jane) of Warner Robins, GA, his son, L. Mike Channell (Dawn) of Knoxville, TN, and his son, R. Dale Channell (Shannon) of Kathleen, GA. Grandchildren include Wes Channell (Andrea) of Knoxville, TN, Clay Channell (Audrey) of Birmingham, AL, Ramey Channell of Kathleen, GA and Hannah C. Wells (Matt) of Bonaire, GA. Great-grandchildren include Caden and Dylan Channell of Knoxville, TN, Cameron, Luke, Noah, and Joseph Channell of Birmingham, AL, and Nolan and Eva Wells of Bonaire, GA.

Clarence was also preceded in death by his father, James Archie Channell, his mother Mary Bruce Channell, and his brothers, James Marvin Channell, Willard Channell, Pascal Channell, and Herman Channell.

Mr. Channell spent his last days with family and friends and under the loving care of the professional staff at Summer’s Landing Assisted Living facility in Warner Robins, GA. The family would like to express a special thanks to Dessa Nobles and her staff for all of their love.

In honor of Clarence N. (“Duck”) Channell, Sr., his family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the First United Methodist Church, 205 North Davis Drive, Warner Robins, GA 31093.

Services for Clarence N. (“Duck”) Channell, Sr. will be held in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. with visitation one hour preceding the service. Mr. Channell will be laid to rest next to Mrs. Channell in Magnolia Park Cemetery following the service.

McCullough Funeral Home and Crematory has the privilege of being entrusted with Mr. Channell’s arrangements.
