Col. William S. "Stape" Marriott, Usaf (Ret)

December 10, 1931 — May 2, 2018

Early on the morning of Wednesday, May 2, 2018, Col. William S. “Stape” Marriott, USAF (Ret.), 86, took his final flight to Heaven where he joined Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior.

Stape was born on December 10, 1931 in Mobile, Alabama to the late Thomas Cary Marriott, Jr. and Evelyn Stapler Marriott. In 1953, he received a Bachelor’s degree from Auburn University where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity. He proudly served his country as a pilot and air training command instructor in the United States Air Force for 28 years before honorably retiring from active duty in 1980. During the Vietnam conflict, Stape flew many successful missions in the RF-101, his favorite plane. A man of deep faith in God, he was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Warner Robins and a former member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was an active participant in the local men’s bowling league, and also found relaxation in his golf game. Carving ducks was another one of his hobbies, along with finding great peace at his home on the waters of Lake Sinclair where he loved to fish and spend time with friends and family. He was preceded in death by his sister, Christine Rutter.

His memory will forever be treasured by his adoring wife of nearly 65 years, Jean Marriott; his children, Jean Marie Butler (Tom) of Lawrenceville and William S. “Bill” Marriott, Jr. of Chicago; five grandchildren, Thomas H. Butler, IV (Noke), Ashley Marriott Curlette, Lauren Marriott, Lindsay Marriott, and Capt. Tyler Marriott (Amarilis); three great-grandchildren, Emily Curlette, Luke Butler, and Grant Butler; brothers, Thomas C. Marriott, III (Dot) and Francis McClelland Marriott (Bruna); and a host of cousins, extended family members, and friends who will fondly remember their time spent with Stape.

Visitation with Col. Marriott’s family will be Monday, May 7, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. The graveside memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at Andersonville National Cemetery with Rev. Ken Morgan officiating. Col. Marriott will be laid to rest with full military honors.

The family wishes to say a word of thanks to the caregivers at both Summer’s Landing Memory Care and Heart of Georgia Hospice. We will be forever grateful for the kindnesses shown to him and to us through your excellent care.
