Doris Gibson Clay

November 20, 1920 — October 20, 2017

Doris Clay, 96, joined her beloved husband, Edward Harold Clay, Sr. in heaven on the evening of Friday, October 20, 2017.

Doris was born on November 20, 1920 in Columbia, South Carolina to the late James and Bobbie Treece Gibson. She grew up in Columbia and shortly after high school, she married Edward and began a family. Mrs. Clay dedicated her life to serving her husband and raising their kids to know and love God. She was a faithful longtime member of Perry United Methodist Church where she was involved in the United Methodist Women, enjoyed singing in the Joy Choir, and served as the church librarian and building superintendent/hostess for 25 years. Doris’s undying generosity and tireless efforts to serve others stood out as she loved donating her free time to the Samaritan’s Closet and the Loaves and Fishes Ministries. Mrs. Clay enjoyed reading, as well, and enjoyed her life to the fullest and making the most out of every moment.

In addition to her husband and parents, Doris was preceded in death by her sisters, Lillian Riegert and Margaret Taylor; and her son-in-law, Lewis Michael Jacobs.

Doris’s memory will forever be treasured by her loving children, Edward Harold Clay, Jr. (Nelda) of Perry, Doris Clay Jacobs of Perry, and John Everett Clay (Karen) of Perry; stepson, Bill Schupp (Elaine) of Charleston, South Carolina; grandchildren, Cathy Mason (Walt), Hal Clay (Anita), Annalee Hanner (Mike), Chad Jacobs (Joanna), Daniel Clay (Ashton), and Bailey Turner (Tom); step-grandchildren, Bo, Krinna, and Sterling Schupp; and 11 great-grandchildren.
