Douglas Wayne Mcconnell

March 1, 1949 — October 4, 2018

Douglas Wayne McConnell, 69, passed away on Thursday, October 4, 2018.

Wayne was born on March 1, 1949 in Macon, Georgia to the late Lewis A. McConnell, Sr. and Cammie Scarborough McConnell. He was a 1967 graduate of Warner Robins High School where he was known to be an accomplished athlete and school leader. Wayne received a dual scholarship in football and basketball and attended the University of Georgia. There, he obtained a Bachelor’s of Business Administration degree.

After college, Wayne went on to have a 37-year career at Georgia Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company. He worked in Personal, Commercial and Brokerage Underwriting areas, including field work and management positions. Working throughout the state to help people and bringing along young talent within the company brought Wayne great joy.

Leisure activities over the years included fly fishing, water sports at Lake Sinclair, and listening to 60’s music. Wayne particularly enjoyed spending time watching his beloved “Bulldogs” and other SEC games.
His memory will forever be treasured by his loving wife of 40 years, Phyllis Elizabeth McConnell of Warner Robins; children, Emily Smith (Michael) of Bonaire and Parker McConnell of Warner Robins; and brother, L.A. “Buster” McConnell, Jr. (Judy) of Warner Robins.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at First Baptist Church of Warner Robins where he was a longtime member. Rev. Chad Wood will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Wayne will be laid to rest in a private graveside service for his family at Magnolia Park Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations be given in memory of Wayne to First Baptist Church of Warner Robins, 1135 Watson Blvd, Warner Robins, GA 31093, www.fbcwr.org or to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 230 E. Ohio St., Ste. 500, Chicago, IL 60611, www.pulmonaryfibrosis.org.
