Dr. Calvin M. Davis

January 7, 1924 — February 6, 2018

Calvin M. Davis, DVM, passed away peacefully on the morning of February 6, 2018, at Navicent Health Center in Macon, GA.

Dr. Davis was born January 7, 1924, in Wrightsville, GA, to the late Johnny Francis Davis and Sophie LeOlier Hall Davis. His siblings James Cecil Davis, Sophie Davis Riner, and James Ray Davis preceded him in death.

Dr. Davis attended a two-room schoolhouse through the seventh grade and graduated from Wrightsville High School in 1941. He stayed home for one year after high school to help on the family farm. His father surprised him just a few days before classes started at the University of Georgia the following year by telling him that he would take him to college there. He was taken to Athens, Georgia, with no prior submission of an application for admission, but was able to start classes that fall term. He attended college for one year and worked in the Horticulture Department before being drafted into the U.S. Navy in June 1943. After Navy Hospital Training School, he spent three years serving as a Navy Medic in the South Pacific on the USS Tripp Destroyer. He was discharged in March, 1946, and returned to school at the University of Georgia. In the fall of 1946, he was enrolled in the College of Veterinary Medicine in the first class of veterinary students following WWII, and graduated Cum Laude in June, 1950. While in school, Dr. Davis met the love of his life, Harriette Peavy, from Unadilla, GA, and they were married shortly after his graduation. Dr. Davis then spent one year working as a Professor in the Large Animal Department at the University of Georgia before moving to Warner Robins in 1951 and opening Davis Animal Hospital. After practicing for ten years, he relocated his practice to the newly paved portion of Watson Boulevard that extended to Centerville. Over the next few years Dr. C. Benjamin Lowery and Dr. Tommy Jenkins joined him in practice and the name was changed to Warner Robins Animal Hospital. Never forgetting his early years, he practiced Veterinary Medicine with great zeal, determination, and a love for all animals. Just prior to his retirement in 1990, his son-in-law, Dr. Kenneth Dorough, joined him in practice.

Dr. Davis was a charter member of Central Baptist Church in Warner Robins and served as a Deacon there. He was also a former member of the Warner Robins Jaycees and the Warner Robins Rotary Club and was a member of the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association and the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Harriette; daughters, Susan Sweat (Forrest) of Blackshear, GA, Becky Preston (Larry), Gale Dorough (Kenneth), and Nancy Kinser, all of Bonaire; Grandchildren, Eddie Preston of Cochran, Chap Sweat (Lindsey) of Anderson, SC, Christie Walsh (Patrick) of Mary Esther, FL, Kari Kinser, Layne Dorough and Chely Kinser, all of Bonaire; and Great-Grandsons Preston and Harrison Brown of Mary Esther, FL.
Visitation for Dr. Davis will be Friday, February 9, at 12:30 p.m. at Central Baptist Church, 1120 Lake Joy Road, Warner Robins. A celebration of his life will be held following the visitation at 2:00 p.m. at the church. Rev. Stephen Byrd and Dr. Owen Bozeman will officiate. Dr. Davis will be laid to rest at Magnolia Park Cemetery following a private committal service.
