Born Lois Edith Chidester on June 15, 1931 to John W. Cobb and Ruth S. Cobb, in Jones County, Georgia, she always preferred to be called Edith. Her character was forged through her childhood years living through the depths of the Great Depression and by witnessing the Second World War as a young teenager. During the Korean War, she enlisted in the United States Air Force. While stationed at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi, she met Kirby L. Chidester, Jr., and upon their marriage, she left the service and began her long career in the Civil Service of the U.S. Government. That career included over 25 years of service at Robins Air Force Base, where she worked since 1968, winning the hearts of many colonels of the Reserve. To keep busy after retirement, she held several part-time positions, including five years as the assistant to her son at his law office. An avid reader, Edith was a regular at the Centerville Library, and in 1998, she was appointed by the Houston County Board of Commissioners to serve on the Houston County Library Board, and served that Board through 2004, participating in the planning for the new Centerville Public Library on Gunn Road.

Edith is survived by her children, Michael L. Chidester (Karla) of Byron, Georgia, and Lori H. Bowen (Jason) of Auburn, Georgia, two grandsons, Kenneth Michael Chidester and Jackson Dennis Bowen, and niece and nephew Cheryl Westberry and Terrell Westberry.

Her family would like to express gratitude to the many physicians, nurses, and staff members of the Houston County Medical Center for the care and concern shown to our mother during her last days. We are also especially grateful to Jennifer Raymo, who assisted our mother with her needs over the course of the last six years, and to John Booher, her longtime friend and neighbor.

For friends unable to attend at this time, the service will be streamed live via the McCullough Funeral Home Facebook page at
