Effie Oliver Welch, 79, passed away on October 6, 2005 in her daughter’s home. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, October 11, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Magnolia Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, October 10, 2005 from 6 until 9 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. Donations may be made to Duke Hospice of Durham, North Carolina 4321 Medical Park Drive Suite, 101 Durham, NC, 27704 or Helping Hands in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, 1829 E. Franklin St, Bldg 600, Chapel Hill, NC, 27514.

Mrs. Welch was born in Moultrie, Georgia on December 26, 1925. She retired from civil service at Robins Air Force Base. During World War II, Mrs. Welch was a ship welder as well as an original Rosie the Riveter. Her husband, Ernest Welch, as well as her parents, Soloman and Maggie Oliver and, six brothers and sisters, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her daughter, Donna Welch, Durham, North Carolina; son, Donnie Welch (Linda), Jefferson, Georgia; sister, Ethel Ulmer, Whigham, Georgia; grandchildren, Josh Humphrey (Liana), Jason Welch (Amy), Donice Archer, Jimmy Burnette (Becky), Jason Burnette ( Misty), Jeffery Burnette (Hope), Stephanie Kolpy; fifteen great-grandchildren.
