Mrs. Elease Gardner Small, age 83, died Sunday morning, September 5, 2004. She was born April 15, 1921 in Kershaw County, the daughter of the late Doctor Frank Gardner and Thelma Mayo Byrd Gardner and was the wife of the late Max Poole Small, Sr. Mrs. Small was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church of Lancaster, SC.

Mrs. Small is survived by a son, Max P. Small, Jr. and his wife Kathy of High Point, NC, 2 daughters, Rita McDow and her husband Warren of Warner Robins, GA, and Gail Epps and her husband Charlie of Charleston, SC, 3 brothers, Randall Gardner of Pawley’s Island, SC, Max Gardner of Florence, SC, and Doug Gardner of Lancaster, 6 sisters, Nettie G. Fountain and Marion G. Newsom both of Lamar, SC, Virginia G. Douglas of Lexington, SC, Sybill G. Smith of West Columbia, SC, Frankie G. Phillips and Laney G. Lucas both of Kershaw, SC, 6 grandchildren, Christopher McDow of Warner Robins and Matthew McDow of Smyrna, Robert and Katrina Epps, and Brian and Sarah Small, and 2 great grandchildren, Emmett and Aidan McDow of Warner Robins.

Mrs. Small was preceded in death by a brother, Mendell Gardner and a sister, Sarah G. Mc Mackin.

The Celebration of Life Service for Mrs. Small will be 2:00 pm, Thursday, September 9, 2004 at First United Methodist Church by Rev. Dan Batson and Eulogist Doug Gardner with burial to follow at Lancaster Memorial Park.

The Family of Mrs. Small will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 pm, Wednesday, September 8, 2004 at Hartley Funeral Home, 1800 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster and the family suggest memorials be made to a Methodist Church of your choice or Portsbridge Hospice, 115 Arkwright Lndg., Macon, GA 31210-1364.
