Ellen Elizabeth Endler

September 14, 1920 — July 12, 2006

Ellen E. Endler, beloved wife of 61 years to Alfred F. Endler, passed away on July 12, 2006 at the Houston Medical Center after an extended illness. She was 85 years old. Visitation will be held at McCullough Funeral Home, Houston Lake Road on Saturday, July 15, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 16, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Warner Robins, with interment in Parkway Memorial Gardens.

Ellen was the eldest daughter of seven children born in Rochester, PA, to the late Frank and Eva Giannakos. As one of the “Greatest Generation”, she was raised during the Depression and learned the value of hard work and the importance of family, faith and friends, which guided and sustained her throughout her life. As a teenager, she assumed responsibility for maintaining the family household and raising her younger siblings. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Al. Following high school and the onset of World War II, she worked for the telephone company in both Pittsburgh and Washington, DC, rising to a supervisory position. On January 8, 1945, she and Al were married in San Antonio, TX, while he was assigned to the Army Air Corps as an instructor pilot. Following the end of the war, she and Al returned to Pittsburgh. During the Korean War, Al was recalled to active duty, and she and the family relocated a number of times, living in California, England, and eventually Warner Robins. She returned to work in 1965 with Flint Electric Membership Corporation as the customer service representative, and retired for medical reasons in the early 1980’s. Though her family, both immediate and extended, was her love and focus, she also found time to serve as a Red Cross volunteer, Sunday School teacher, and Girl Scout leader. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the PTA, First Presbyterian Church, and was a long time member of the Warner Robins Women’s Club, where she was past honored as “Woman of the Year”. She was a voracious reader, enjoyed playing bridge, sewing, cooking, and being with family and friends. Ellen was deeply involved in the early years of the development of the Warner Robins Air Force Museum, spending countless hours working as a volunteer in the gift shop, and wherever else she might be needed. Ellen was an outstanding cook, and her talents were shared and loved by many. She was a friend to all. Her home and table were always a welcoming spot for those who came to her door and one always left with a plate of goodies.

Ellen is survived by her husband of 61 years, Al, her youngest sister, Peggy Bertolino, New York, her son, Rick (Linda) Endler, Aiken, SC; daughter, Jo Ellen (Noel) Robbins, Warner Robins; granddaughters, Elizabeth (Jimmy) Wells, St. Paul, MN; Sarah (David) Pitre, Fairhope, AL; Mary Ellen (Chad) Miller, Winter Park, FL; step-granddaughter, Ashley (Bill) Pontius, great-granddaughter Madeline Pitre, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Rebecca Lynn Endler. Ellen will be deeply missed by her husband, family, and her many friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church 1139 Watson Blvd. Warner Robins, GA 31088 or one’s favorite charity. Friends may call at the residence of Jo Robbins, 25 Willow Lake Drive, Warner Robins.
