Evelyn M. Cox

November 7, 1927 — April 1, 2016

Evelyn M. Cox, 88, passed away on April 1, 2016 in Perry, Georgia, after a brave battle with liver cancer.

She was born in Allentown, Georgia, and had resided in Perry since 1965. She met the love of her life, Wallace L. Cox, Jr. when he was stationed at Robins Air Force Base. They were married in 1952 in Stoneham, Massachusetts. As a military family, the Coxes lived in Texas, New Jersey, Germany and Georgia. Evelyn's working years were spent as a bookkeeper in Macon and San Antonio, after which she devoted her full time and energy to being a loving wife, mother and homemaker. Wallace preceded Evelyn in death, also succumbing to liver cancer in 2010. She wrote down these words, from an Irish headstone, after the passing of her beloved husband: "Death leaves a heartache no one can heal. Love leaves a memory no one can steal."

The daughter of the late Edward James May and Annie Ella May, Evelyn was also preceded in death by four siblings, Ernest Foster, Effie Lampp, Juanita Mason and Franklin May. She is survived by her son, Leslie J. Cox (Arlene) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and her two grandsons, Christopher (Gina) and Jonathon (Julia), currently reside in Utah and Arizona, respectively. She is also survived by five sisters and one brother, Vera McDonald (Bobby) of Centerville, Opal David (Donald) of Warner Robins, Larry May (June) of Warner Robins, Shirley Reece (Floyd) of Charlotte, North Carolina, Barbara Cross (Lee) of Perry, and Faye Scott of Charlotte, North Carolina. Evelyn's extended family includes two nieces, seven nephews, five great-nieces and four great-nephews.

As a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Perry, Evelyn was a dedicated and exemplary Christian. She was a member of the Dot Hardy Sunday School class, and her attendance there and interaction with her friends became the highlight of each week.
