Evelyn Peacock Mccain

October 18, 1926 — June 2, 2022

Evelyn Peacock McCain of Cumming, formerly of Oxford and Warner Robins, died on June 2, 2022, after a brief illness. Evelyn was born and raised in Screven, Ga. and spent most of her life in Warner Robins. She had a career of forty plus years at Robins Air Force Base in the Transportation Department. She would often tell friends and family that “anyone who transferred to or from RAFB” had to come through her desk.

Evelyn was an active member of the Pilot Club where she served as President of the Warner Robins Pilot Club and as the Georgia District Governor. As she commented in a ceremony celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Warner Robins Pilot Club, she was able to “share her Pilot experience with her sister, Vivian and with the love of her life, Don” who was active in the Co-Pilot organization. Of the many Pilot service projects she loved, the “Care Trak” project was her passion. Well into her eighties, Evelyn was traveling through the Middle Georgia area fitting tracking devices on people who for any number of reasons, were at risk of wandering from home. When not fitting or delivering devices, she was speaking to law enforcement, caregivers, and family members about the many benefits of the Care Trak technology. The Pilot Club was a source of personal growth, service projects, long-lasting friendships, and wonderful memories for her.

Evelyn was a long-time member of Central Baptist Church. She had an active role in the kitchen ministry for many years. After leaving Warner Robins, she joined Macedonia Baptist Church in Oxford and continued her spiritual growth and community involvement.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Crawley M. and Ollie Peacock; her husband, Don McCain; her sisters, Winonna Peacock, Vivian Hartman, and Claudine McCorkle; her beloved son, Alvin; and her brothers-in-law, Harry Hartman and Harry McCorkle.

Left to cherish her memory are Karen, Rachel, Stuart, Michelle, Allie, and Abby Thornton; Wallace and Faythe Thornton; Angelina, Carlos, Damian, and Dorian Romero; Jim, Karen, Ben, Thomas, and Evelyn Wiley; Amy Lynn, Seth Pride; Cherie, Dennis, Berit, and Lindsey Everhart; Erin, Thaddeus, and Eloise Rolle; Vivian Hartman, Matt, Mary, Amelia and Wyatt Eady, Scott, Finley, and Baker Eady; Steve, Pia, and McKenzie McCorkle, Ashley, John, and Ava Atkins.

As we have shared memories of and stories about Evelyn, one that we always mention is her beloved husband, Don telling her on his deathbed that he would be “waiting by the river for her to help her across”. Evelyn would always say that he was waiting for her because she couldn’t swim. In her mid-seventies, a lack of swimming skills did not keep her from climbing into a kayak with her great nephew, Lindsey and paddling out six miles into the Pacific Ocean with us to watch humpback whales’ migration. She had an adventurous spirit and always told us, “I might not be able to go as fast as y’all go, but I won’t be far behind!” Don has been patiently waiting by the river for many years, but we are happy that she has been with us for so very long!
