Guangmao Nie

May 10, 1940 — October 5, 2008

Guangmao Nie, 68, departed this world on Sunday, October 5, 2008, due to injuries sustained from being hit by a car in front of his home. Guangmao was born on May 10, 1940, in Shanghai, China. He spent his early years in Suzhou, China. At the age of sixteen, he journeyed thousands of miles away from home to work as an electrical engineer, in Inner Mongolia, where he met and married his wife, Shan. Together they shared thirty-eight years of wonderful life, two loving children, two adorable grandchildren, and endless unforgettable memories.

His deep belief that a strong education is the foundation for future success led him to pursue higher educational opportunities abroad. His dedication to this goal led him to master the English language, permitting him to attain a Chinese scholarship to study at the University of Alabama in 1987. There he earned a Master Degree in Management Science in 1989 and in 1994, at the age of fifty-four, became one of the oldest people to earn a Ph.D. in Economics.

Guangmao brought his love of education and knowledge to those around him, teaching at several colleges and universities, including Albany State University, Fort Valley State University and Rust College. He published articles in nationally recognized Economics Journals and in academic books. In May 2008, he retired as an Associate Professor at Stillman College.

Guangmao is known to his family and friends as a very gentle and kind man, often in his uniquely quite ways. He often found quality among plain things. His perseverance, caring for others, strong sense of values and many other amazing qualities influenced people around him. He will be missed more than these words can convey.

His parents, Qiying Nie and Guangzhang Tang, preceded him in death. His memory will forever be treasured by his wife, Shan Fu; son, Mingzhou Nie, Fishers, Indiana; daughter, Minghua Nie, Los Angeles, California; daughter-in-law, Hong Jiang, Fishers, Indiana; sisters, Guangyi Nie, ZhuZhou, China, Guangyu Nie, Suzhou, China, and Guangda Nie, Suzhou, China; grandson, Ethan Nie, Fishers, Indiana; granddaughter, Grace Nie, Fishers, Indiana; nephew, Rong Nie, Mountain View, California; and many friends.

Visitation will be Saturday, October 11, 2008, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 11, 2008, in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home.
