Helen Zachos Pool

Early Wednesday morning, June 15, 2016, Helen Zachos Pool (96) passed away peacefully in her sleep. Born on April 26, 1920, Helen was the daughter of the late George Louis Zachos from Greece and Zella Shupe Zachos of McIntyre, Iowa. Helen was a homemaker and the devoted wife of the late William Harvey Pool of Tifton, Georgia. Mrs. Pool was born in Oelwein, Iowa and moved to Atlanta in 1928. Following her graduation from Atlanta High School, she attended The University of Georgia and earned a degree in Home Economics in 1943.

Helen served as an air traffic controller during World War II. After the war was over, she returned to Georgia to work as a Home Demonstration Agent with the Georgia Extension Service in Cordele, Cochran, and later in Tifton, GA where she met her future husband, William Pool, the County Agent.

Following their marriage in June of 1955 in Atlanta, Helen and William returned to Tifton where they raised three boys. In addition to cooking amazing meals and maintaining the books for their small farm, Helen was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Tifton where she taught Sunbeams and faithfully served in the church nursery every Sunday for 40 years. She has resided at Summers Landing in Warner Robins for the past 11 years.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Louis George Zachos and sister Anthony Zachos Walls.

Helen will be missed by her family including her three sons: Harvey Pool and Lisa of Fort Valley, Dr. Gary Pool and Kima of Warner Robins, and Dr. Tommy Pool of Marietta. She also leaves five grandchildren: Dillon Wade Pool (Leah); William Harvey Pool, III; William Brannon Pool; Rebecca Pool Evatt (Rustin); and Mary Ivy Pool.

The family will receive friends on Friday, June 17, 2016 at the McCullough Funeral Home in Warner Robins from 6 – 8 PM. A funeral service celebrating Helen's life will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at 11:00 AM in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. A grave side service will be held at 3:00 PM at the Beulah Church Cemetery north of Wrightsville, Georgia.
