Herschell Wade Toms

June 19, 1933 — July 18, 2022

Herschell Wade Toms, 89, entered into rest on Monday, July 18, 2022.

Mr. Toms was born on June 19, 1933, in Americus, Georgia, to the late Claude A. Toms and Beatrice Wellons Toms. Herschell was a faithful member of Southside Baptist Church and active with George Salter’s Life Group. A Navy veteran, he served upon the USS Hornet during the Korean War. After 30 years of dedicated service to the defense of the United States of America, Herschell retired from Robins Air Force Base. He went on to work for another 20 plus years at Handy Man Hardware, where he was often described as the “Little man with a gray beard.” A longtime resident of Warner Robins, Herschell spent some of his happiest moments with his loving wife watching their children and grandchildren play football and Little League at the ballpark and in stadiums. He was the true epitome of a loving and faithful husband, Christian man, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend to many. Herschell was small in stature but large in love, dedication and compassion. Always up to something, he had a wonderful sense of humor, which often seemed to be overshadowed by the memorable laughter of his loving wife. Above all, he was a faithful servant of the Lord, as well as gracious and kind. Herschell’s legacy is one his family is proud to carry on.

His wife of 57 years at the time of her passing, Marie Crumley Toms; his parents; two brothers, Robert “Bobby” Toms and Claude A. Toms Jr.; and granddaughter, Morgan Toms Duke, preceded Herschell in death.

His memory will forever be treasured by his sons, Mike Toms (Lucy), Randy Toms (Jane), and Keith Toms (Zulema), all of Warner Robins; sister, Brenda Toms Buchanan of Plains; grandchildren, Christopher Toms, Gabriel Toms, Callie Toms Beatty, Taylor Toms Carriker, Jordan Toms, and Dillon Toms; and great-grandchildren, Peyton Beatty, Elliott Toms, Blaine Beatty, Porter Toms, Campbell Beatty, Evie Jo Toms and Dani Carriker.

Visitation will be Tuesday evening, July 19, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home.
