Hulda Yawn Cook

August 20, 1931 — April 3, 2014

Hulda Yawn Cook, 82, passed away on Thursday, April 3, 2014.

Mrs. Cook was born on August 20, 1931 in Telfair County. The first person in her family to attend college, she taught school for 29 years before retiring due to a medical disability. She lived in Warner Robins for the past 36 years and was an active volunteer in the community.

She attended Brewton Parker College and graduated from Georgia Teachers College, and attended classes at Southwestern Seminary.

Mrs. Cook and her husband were faithful members and workers at First Baptist Church in Americus and West Highland Baptist Church in Macon. In Warner Robins, they served together at First Baptist, Westside, Friendship and Shirley Hills Baptist churches. She often led vibrant couples Sunday School classes, and in her retirement, she organized dozens of children's Bible Drill groups in Middle Georgia.

Mrs. Cook also led a decade-long effort to build the first group home for the Heart of Georgia Developmental Disabilities Ministry, designed for adults with special needs. The home is named in her honor. Mrs. Cook was a certified master gardener, and loved little more than entertaining a round-table book club in an outdoor setting or sharing her plants with others.

Survived by her husband of 61 years, Hal Cook, Mrs. Cook also had two sons, Andy (Melody) and Dany Cook, three granddaughters, and two great grandchildren. She was the daughter of the late Henry and Stella Yawn. Preceded in death by her brother Roger Yawn, she is also survived by siblings Roy Yawn, Vira (Raleigh) Garnto, Edith (Hal) Fisher, Henry (Linda) Yawn, and James (Gail) Yawn.

A celebration of her remarkable life will be held at Shirley Hills Baptist Church on Saturday, April 5, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Tim Millwood officiating. Interment will follow in Parkway Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Friday, 6-8 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations for the Heart of Georgia DDM, 238 Hatcher Road, Warner Robins, GA 31088.
