Irene Eaves

August 28, 1920 — October 21, 2017

Irene Eaves, age 97, passed away on Saturday, October 21, 2017, at Heatherwood Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Newport, Rhode Island.

Irene was born in Catlettsburg, Kentucky in 1920 - 10 days after the 19th Amendment was ratified, which granted women the right to vote. Irene was a life long supporter of women’s rights, and was very active in political issues.

Irene was proud to be from Kentucky, loved watching the Kentucky Derby, and was made an honorary Aide-de-Camp to the Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. She was the eighth of nine children, and was predeceased by her siblings, her parents, James and Ida (Gee) Hale, and a daughter, Cynthia Lee Eaves.

Irene was working civil service at Wright-Patterson AFB when she met her future husband, Harry Eaves, who was stationed there. After their marriage, and different duty stations, they made their home in Warner Robins, GA. Irene was very active in the Episcopal Women’s Church Group, the Democratic Women’s Club, and the Garden Club. Irene and Harry were both very active at All Saints Episcopal Church, and were part of the original group who were instrumental in the building of that church. Sadly, Harry passed away suddenly in 1980. Irene moved to Rhode Island in 2010 to be near her daughter, Ellyn.

Irene is survived by her son, Douglas R. Eaves (Debbie) of Dublin, GA, her daughter, Ellyn Eaves-Hileman (Ken) of Portsmouth, RI, beloved grandchildren, Harrison E. Hileman of New Orleans, LA, Sarah E. Hileman of Providence, RI, and Mark Sterling of Dublin, GA. Irene is also survived by her great-grandson, Roger Sterling, also of Dublin, GA, many nieces and nephews, and many friends who considered Irene to be their second mom.

All who knew Irene were truly blessed to have walked with her on a part of her wonderful journey.
