Iris "Nell" Barton

May 12, 1925 — November 18, 2020

Iris “Nell” Barton passed into the arms of her Heavenly Father on November 18, 2020 in Perry, Georgia. She was 95 years old. Nell was born on May 12, 1925 in Wilcox County to the late John B. Dennard and Alice Rycroft Dennard. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John W. Barton, Jr. and sisters, Palmer Jordan, Charlotte Bridges, Amanda Cummings, and Clarece Hunt.

Nell was a true homemaker. Growing up in Wilcox County during the Great Depression years with her four sisters, Nell learned how to be resourceful and conservative. She graduated from Pineview High School where she played basketball. In 1945 she married John W. Barton, Jr. and was a devoted wife for 44 years until John’s death in 1989. She raised two children with John and was very active in the church when her children were growing up, helping wherever she was needed.

She and her husband John were local business owners for many years when they had their shop, Barton’s Men and Boys Store. In addition to owning the store, Nell was a member of the local VFW Women’s Auxiliary. She was a talented seamstress and loved to cook for her friends and family. Nell was outdoorsy by nature and had a tender heart for all animals. Nell’s affection extended to everyone she met. She was a caring and compassionate woman, always there to lend a hand.

Her vice, if she had one, was her sweet tooth and Nell never turned down chocolate or ice cream. She loved the Lord, read her Bible regularly, and enjoyed listening to Gospel music. For Nell, family was the most important facet of her life. She took her role as a homemaker seriously, devoting her time and energy to raising her children and spending time with her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Left to cherish Nell’s memory are her daughter, Pat Wade, son, Frank Barton (Pat), grandsons, Patrick Wade, Michael Wade (Tessa) and Brian Wade (Nikki); granddaughter, Brandi Hurley (Grant); 10 great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 22, 2020 at McCullough Funeral Home. A graveside funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 22, 2020 at Woodlawn Cemetery in Perry with Pastor Parker Agnew officiating. Nell will be buried next to her husband John after the service. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the family respectfully requires that attendees wear masks and observe social distancing.

For friends unable to attend at this time, the service will be streamed live via the McCullough Funeral Home Facebook page at www.facebook.com/mcculloughfuneralhome/live/.
