After his retirement, Joel went to work in the transportation industry.

An avid chess player, Joel loved the strategy and challenge of a good game. His love of good games extended to soccer, where he coached his son’s teams for a number of years.

In addition to his wife, Jackie, Joel is survived by his son, Justin Wade Books of Warner Robins; mother, Marilyn Miller Books of Pine Island, Minnesota; and siblings Barbara Blank and Maynard Books.
