Kantilal Lakhu

January 24, 1937 — March 22, 2020

The journey all began in Springs, South Africa, where Kantilal Lakhu was born on January 24th, 1937. He attended one year of university before deciding he was more of an entrepreneur and took over the family business by running the local fruit and vegetable market that catered to wholesale and public business. He enjoyed playing cricket with the many friends made with his magnetic personality. As his family grew and wanting bigger and better opportunities for himself and especially them, Kantilal moved the family to Toronto, Canada, where he went into the dry cleaning business. He and his childhood best-friend/brother founded the Gujarati cultural society of Toronto and established the first Gujarati school in the city. He loved to play tennis with all the friends and family that had migrated to Canada from South Africa. They all valued family time and went on many weekend picnics and camping trips. His ambition to become more successful to provide more for his family was sped up by the unexpected death of his best friend, so his journey continued to Perry, Georgia, where he went into the lodging business. Kantilal continued to be very active in the local community by helping to create the first Indian prayer group. He also added volleyball to his list of activities. He was a huge Braves fan and would never miss a game.

A lifetime of accomplishments made him the amazing man he was and will always be remembered as. Retiring at last in 2014, he continued to stay active with daily walks and loved eating the varieties of fruits and vegetables he once sold. Although he always dreamed of visiting Australia but never made it there, the time he spent in Brazil with his wife was priceless and surely made up for it. He finally entered into rest on March 22nd, 2020. He was a strong supportive family man to his wife, Urmila Lakhu and children Mehesh, Pramod, Jay, and Meena. He leaves eight amazing grandchildren and countless family and friends. Kantilal’s addictive smile and kind hearted soul will never be forgotten and will be remembered by everyone.

A private service for his family will be held at the Lakhu Residence.

McCullough Funeral Home and Crematory has the privilege of being entrusted with these arrangements.
