Ltc Julian Rufus Fussell, Jr., Usar (Ret)

June 12, 1921 — February 25, 2013

Julian Rufus Fussell, Jr., 91, died peacefully at his home on Monday, February 25, 2013, after an extended illness.

Born on June 12, 1921 in Ocala, Florida, he was the son of the late Julius R. Fussell and Catherine Martin Fussell. Julian was a veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict. During WWII, he served in the European Theatre – 36th Infantry Division. He was captured by members of the Hermann Göring Panzer Division during the breakout of the Battle of Anzio. He was wounded while escaping capture and received the Purple Heart. He served in the 3rd Infantry Division in Korea and received the Bronze Star plus other distinguished awards and citations. He retired from the United States Army Reserve with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was preceded in death by his son, Julian R. Fussell, III, step-daughter, Kelli Ann Felton, and brother, George Fussell.

He was employed at Robins Air Force Base where he served many years as Distribution Material Processing Chief (DSF). He retired in 1986 as Special Projects Officer. After retiring from RAFB, he worked as Director of the Houston County Red Cross.

Julian attended high school in Cedartown, Georgia; Mortuary College in Nashville, Tennessee; and the Army Specialized Training Program at the University of Georgia. He was active in many military and community affairs and was a member of Christ The Redeemer Anglican Church.

His memory will forever be treasured by his loving wife, Marcia Ann Fussell, Warner Robins; daughter, Georgia Murphy, Charleston, South Carolina; step-son, Bill Felton, Warner Robins; grandson, Josh Murphy (Kelly), Washington, D.C.,; granddaughter, Kristian Ebert (Michael), Charleston, South Carolina; great grandson, Michael P. Ebert, III (M.P. III); brother, Tom Fussell (Barbara), Guilford, Connecticut; sister in law, Martha Fussell, Eustis, Florida; loyal and loving caregivers, Kendra, Terri, Frances, Cassandra, Brenda, and Gwen; and special nurse, Amy.

The family will greet visitors one hour prior to the Memorial Service on Saturday at the funeral home. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2013 in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home with Father Paul Gerlock officiating. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests that donations be made to Christ the Redeemer Anglican Church, 2815 Highway 41 North, Fort Valley, Georgia 31030.
