Laverne S. Norris

LaVerne Norris entered into rest on Sunday, February 1, 2015.

LaVerne was born in Augusta, Georgia. She was a longtime member of Shirley Hills Baptist Church. LaVerne called Warner Robins her home after living here for the past forty-three years. She traveled the world with her husband Russel and they lived in six states and five foreign countries with their daughters, Nicki and Donna. After Russ' retirement, she took the position as manager of the Houston Mall when it first opened. She later retired and became active in community affairs making many friends. LaVerne loved flowers. The American Camellia Society even named a flower after her and she always treasured that special honor.

She was a member of the Middle Georgia Vocational School Board of Directors from 1986 – 1994. LaVerne then spearheaded Houston County's first $500, 000 United Way campaign in 1989; she was awarded their Outstanding Leadership designation for her efforts. She was named Woman of Acheivement (1987) by the Business and Professional Womans' Club for Outstanding Leadership, and the Warner Robins Civitan Club named her Citizen of the Year (1989). During her time volunteering with the American Heart Association, she was awarded Volunteer of the Year (1987). LaVerne was a member of the Warner Robins Chamber of Commerce during which time she was named Person of the Year (1988) and she also received the prestigious Charley L. Jones Award (1999).

LaVerne served on the Carl Vinson Memorial Chapter #96 of the Air Force Association Board during which time she was awarded Chapter Member of the Year (1989), Medal of Merit (1990), Exceptional Service Award (1991) and the Georgia Member of the Year (1993-94). Among her distinguished accomplishments, LaVerne was elected to the City Council of Warner Robins and served for five years (1990-95). She served on the first International City Festival Board as their Chairperson and was awarded their Outstanding Leadership (1994.) LaVerne was a charter member of the Convention and Visitor's Bureau and served as their Chairman from 1995 – 2000. She also served on the first Board of Directors for the Middle Georgia Technical College and their Foundation Board (2000-2003). LaVerne was a member of the Warner Robins Rotary Club and there received the Vocational Service Award for Outstanding Service (2000). Her husband, Russel James Norris, parents, Cluese and Margaret Storey, and brothers, Forrest and Lamar Storey all preceded her in death.



Her memory will forever be treasured by her daughters, Nicki Norris of Prague, Czech Republic and Donna Raiford of North Augusta, South Carolina; grandsons, Todd Parham of Seoul, South Korea, and Spencer Cushman of N. Augusta, South Carolina; five great grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Tuesday, February 3, 2015, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 3, 2015, in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Entombment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations be given In Memory of LaVerne S. Norris to Heart of Georgia Hospice, 103 Westridge Drive, Warner Robins, Georgia, 31088.
