Latrelle "Susie" Atkinson

June 6, 1935 — August 18, 2019

Latrelle “Susie” Atkinson, 84, passed into the hands of her Lord on Sunday, August 18, 2019.
Latrelle “Susie” was born in Mystic, Georgia on June 6, 1935 to the late William Lafayette and Erma Cavanaugh Kilgore. She was a loving and devoted homemaker whose family was always her highest priority. Over her life, she answered to an assortment of names. She was born Betty Latrelle Kilgore and was called Latrelle by her family and friends before marrying at the young age of 16. She spent the next 20 years moving from base to base with the sailor who had renamed her Susie. That may seem odd to you, but his name was Dillard Jackson and she called him “Bill.” Her new friends then knew her only as Susie. She later birthed four children who called her Mama, but it wasn’t until she had her first grandchild that she took on the name that she cherished the most. She became “Nana” to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many, many other children and their parents who she was only connected to through love. She was a member of Second Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dillard Jackson “Bill” Atkinson; daughter, Debbie Story; brother, James “Jim” Kilgore; and sister-in-law, Jean Kilgore.

Her memory will forever be treasured by her children, Allen Atkinson, Tammy Atkinson, and Denise Atkinson; grandchildren, Mark Scarborough, Kevin Scarborough, Jeremy Atkinson and Dianne Atkinson; great-grandchildren, Christopher Atkinson, Alana Atkinson, Ethan Atkinson, Lincoln Atkinson and Elizabeth Scarborough; brother, Lamar Kilgore; and sister-in-law, LaVerne Kilgore.

Visitation will be Thursday, August 22, 2019 from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral service will immediately follow at 2 p.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home with Reverend Mike Dorough officiating. Afterward, Latrelle “Susie” will be laid to rest in Magnolia Park Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Hospice Care Options for the kindness and support shown to Mrs. Atkinson and her family during this time. They would also like to express a special 'thank you' to Lindsey who was a godsend.

McCullough Funeral Home and Crematory has the privilege of being entrusted with these arrangements.
