Leah Louise Davis Whelan

November 8, 1921 — September 3, 2017

Leah Whelan joined her beloved husband, James Robert Whelan in heaven on the afternoon of Sunday, September 3, 2017. She was 95 years old.

Leah was born on November 8, 1921 in Highland Park, Michigan to the late Edward M. and Clara E. Davis. She took great pride in serving our country in the United States Navy during World War II. Her biggest regret was being discharged after the end of the war. Leah went on to work at Ford Motor Company following in her father’s footsteps. He was on speaking terms with Henry Ford, himself. Leah met her future husband, James Whelan, who also worked for Ford after being released from the Air Force following the Korean War. Their union resulted in three fine children.

Leah loved to quilt and sew, but was best known for her love of animals, cats especially. She was affectionately known as the neighborhood “Cat Lady” who took in strays and took them to get fixed and released. Leah never met a stray she wouldn’t feed and always had a warm bed set up on her porch on cold winter nights.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Robert Whelan in 2009.

Leah’s memory will forever be treasured by her loving children, Catherine A. Finella (Edward) and Colin J. Whelan (Robin); grandchildren, Trevor and Clair Whelan; sister, Marion Owens; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, September 18th in Andersonville National Cemetery where she will be laid to rest with Military Honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations be given in memory of Leah L. Whelan to Macon Purrs and Paws, 717 Windsor Rd., Macon, GA 31204.
