Leila Lenora "Lee" Mcwhorter

Leila McWhorter, 77, entered into rest on Monday, October 23, 2017.

Leila was born on January 23, 1940 in Tifton, Georgia to the late Grady and Leila Mae Gibbs. She was a well-loved teacher and librarian at Northside Middle School. From the time she was young, Leila loved learning and excelled in school. In 1962, she graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Journalism and earned her Teacher’s Certification the following year. Leila then earned her Library Certification from Shorter College in 1968 and went on to become an Honor Graduate from UGA earning a Master’s in Library Science and 6th Year Media Specialist Degree in 1976 and 1977. In her free time, she enjoyed scuba diving and was a member of the Middle Georgia Diver’s Association for 30 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Alexander McWhorter, Sr.

Leila’s memory will forever be treasured by her children, John McWhorter (Doris) of Macon and Leila Filson (Sam) of Fleming Island, Florida; grandchildren, Michelle Zigler (Matthew), Alex and Johnathan McWhorter, and Anthony and Andrew Sailors; and great-grandson, Colton Zigler.

A funeral service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to the service. Leila will be laid to rest in a private committal service at Hickory Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Tifton, Georgia.

McCullough Funeral Home and Crematory has the privilege of being entrusted with Mrs. McWhorter’s arrangements.
