Leon Howard Yawn

May 11, 1932 — October 25, 2017

Leon Yawn, 85, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 25, 2017.

Leon was born on May 11, 1932 in Chauncey, Georgia to the late George W. and Lola Scarborough Yawn. A 1949 graduate of Chauncey High School, he joined the United States Air Force and served for a few years during the Korean War. Leon went on to work in Civil Service at Robins Air Force Base for 37 years retiring as a supply systems analyst.

On August 10, 1956, Leon made the beautiful Jean Hill Gardner his wife, and together they raised two sons to know and love Jesus Christ. He joined Central Baptist Church in 1961 where he enjoyed serving as Deacon, a Sunday School teacher, and was a member of For His Glory Sunday School Class and the Royal Ambassadors. Leon and Jean also volunteered to help start Sandy Valley Baptist Church for six years before returning back to Central Baptist.

In their retirement, they moved to Lake Sinclair for several years where they attended Manley Memorial Baptist Church. Leon was instrumental in starting the RA program there. In his free time, he loved gardening and serving other people, especially the elderly.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Craig Gardner; and his sister, Hazel Hickman.

His memory will forever be treasured by his loving wife of 61 years, Jean Gardner Yawn of Warner Robins; sons, Steven Paul Gardner (Lee) of Pelham, Alabama and Samuel Grady Gardner (Barbara) of Kathleen; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Georgia May LaFavor and Mildred McVey, both of McRae; and one nephew.

Visitation will be Saturday, October 28, 2017 from 1:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. Leon will be laid to rest in a private committal service for the family at Parkway Memorial Gardens on Sunday.
