Lt. Col. Robert Sterling "Bob" Sharp, Usaf (Ret.)

August 28, 1930 — November 24, 2015

Robert Sterling Sharp, 85, was united with his Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 due to complications from COPD and emphysema.

Bob was born to Morrison and Beulah (Gilmore) Sharp on August 28, 1930 in Ennis, Texas. He received a B.B.A. degree in 1952 from North Texas State University. He was married to Nell (Freeman), deceased, on October 5, 1950.

Lt.Col. Sharp (Ret.) enjoyed 24 years of active military service in the Air Force as Master Navigator and Electronics Warfare Officer. He logged 5500 flight hours; 1200 hours were served in combat duty during the Vietnam Conflict. He flew 88 missions out of Thailand during that time. For service to his country, Bob received 8 Air Medals and Meritorious Services Medals. He was a member of 'Old Crows."

Bob was active in the Warner Robins community after his discharge from military service. He opened the first travel agency in Warner Robins and maintained an active business for 25 years. A certified travel counselor, Bob also became a lifetime member of CTC.

Bob's civic activities included Chairman of Warner Robins Chamber of Commerce, President of Warner Robins Noon Optimist Club, Lt. Governor, Zone 12, and President of Warner Robins Rotary Club where he was also a Paul Harris Fellow and Will Walt Fellow. Additionally, Bob served as President of WRING (Warner Robins Industry WOW Group) and President of the local Sojourners organization. His other interests led him to become President of Shrine Oasis, Stuttgart, Germany and Master Mason with the Waxahachie, Texas Lodge 290, AL Sihah Shrine, and 32nd degree Scottish Rite in Macon, Georgia.

As a young teen, he earned his Life Scout rank in Texas. Bob was a member of Shirley Hills Baptist Church in Warner Robins.

Those who know him will recall his love of golf - he played until his legs gave out and always strove to better his game. When he could no longer get out on the golf course himself, he sat for hours watching the golf tournaments on television, advising the players on their swings and putts! Many in the community were favored with a model from a favored pastime - building bird houses. These miniature delights were perfect in every minute detail, including some with a personalized outhouse! These are exquisite reminders of a multi-talented man.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Nell, and his parents, Morrison and Beulah Sharp.

Bob will be missed by his beloved companion and friend, Milly Gentry. Milly spent many hours each day caring for Bob when he became housebound and was a chosen companion when he could travel and take cruises. She brightened his lonely moments. Also missing him are family members: daughters, Beverly Pond (Richard) of Austin, Texas, Vicki Tindall (Danny) of Lakeland, Florida, and Suzanne Sharp of Warner Robins, Georgia. He has two grandchildren, Joy Boyd (Joseph) and Jared Sharp Tindall, both of Lakeland, Florida. He was Papa Bob to his only great-grandchild, Liam Finnegan "Finn" Boyd of Lakeland, Florida.

Bob had a great love of people and counted many as friends. Bill McDaniel and Tucker Haught, his golfing buddies, brightened his day with their visits to his home in his later years. Not a week would go by without one or both of them calling or visiting with him. Bob also kept close contact through the years with his nephew, Bill Newcomb and Bill's family, calling Bill the brother he never had.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 27, 2015 in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to the service. Afterwards, Mr. Sharp will be laid to rest in a private committal service at Magnolia Park Mausoleum.

Saying goodbye has been hard for all who loved Bob. In his memory, memorials may be given to the charity of the individual's choice, Shirley Hills Baptist Church, 615 Corder Rd., Warner Robins, GA 31088, AAONMS Shrine, 222 Mecca Dr., Macon, GA 31206 or Homestead Hospice, 500 Osigian Blvd., Ste. 300, Warner Robins, GA 31088.
