Lt. Col. William L. Wight, Sr., Usaf (Ret.)

February 26, 1934 — October 23, 2017

On the evening of Monday, October 23, 2017, William L. Wight, Sr., 83, died peacefully.

Bill was born in Buena Vista, Georgia on February 26, 1934. A proud United States Air Force Veteran, he bravely served his country as a pilot flying refueling tankers. Subsequent to his active duty career, he remained in the Air Force Reserve while working as an industrial engineer in Civil Service at Robins Air Force Base. He retired in 1989.

Buddy married Drane Hart Wight on July 20, 1957 and together they raised three children. He was deeply involved in his children’s lives and enjoyed coaching Little League baseball for the entirety of his son’s childhood. Bill was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church in Warner Robins and the Winmore Sunday School Class. There, he served as the church’s treasurer for 45 years and was always devoted to the precise bookkeeping of the church. He was an avid hunter who loved all wildlife, particularly at Yellowstone National Park. Bill was a super fan of Georgia Tech (his Alma Mater where he received a Bachelor’s in Engineering) and of the Atlanta Falcons, as well. He loved all of these things dearly, but he delighted in his children and grandchildren most of all. Bill’s generous spirit and sweet personality will always be remembered by his family, friends, and all who knew him.

He leaves his memory behind with his loving children, Billy Wight (Kim), Deborah Wight-Knight, and Virginia Wight; five grandchildren; brother, Burton Wight, Sr.; and twin sister, Caroline Wight McDaniel.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at Buena Vista Cemetery. Dr. Jimmy Asbell and Rev. Ben Lee will officiate. Following the service, the family will greet friends at a reception at Buena Vista United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations be given in memory of William Wight, Sr. to First United Methodist Church of Warner Robins, 205 N. Davis Dr., Warner Robins, GA 31093.

McCullough Funeral Home and Crematory has the privilege of being entrusted with Mr. Wight’s arrangements.
