Lynn Walraven Wicks

August 1, 1954 — January 13, 2019

On Sunday afternoon, January 13, 2019, Lynn W. Wicks peacefully passed away at Heart of Georgia Hospice in Perry.

Lynn was the daughter of the late Julian Walraven and Mrs. Evelyn Rabitsch Walraven. Born in Atlanta in 1954, she grew up mainly in Jenkins County in east Georgia and was a 1972 graduate of Jenkins County High School. It was there that she met her high-school sweetheart, Dean W. Wicks. Following graduation, she attended Georgia Southern from 1972 to 1974. In 1974, she and Dean were married and together they moved to Texas. Lynn then transferred to the University of Texas from which she graduated in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology.

Later, during her career as an educator, she went on to receive her Teaching Certification from Tift College in 1985 and then a master’s degree in School Counseling from Fort Valley State University in 1994.

Lynn spent a total of 33 years teaching and working as a school counselor. She began in 1985 and spent 3 years teaching 5-year-old kindergarten at Trinity United Methodist. Following this, she spent 21 years as a teacher at Robins Elementary until the school’s closing in 2009. She worked for the last 9 years as a school counselor at Perry Primary and Langston Road Elementary. Lynn was also a devoted and active member at Central Baptist Church. She joined on a Sunday in 1978, and by the following Wednesday she was teaching GA’s at Central. It was just the beginning of a lifetime of involvement in her church home. She would go on to serve as both a GA Leader and Director, Sunday School Teacher, Pre-school Sunday School Director, WMU Director, and as a Vacation Bible School Director and leader for a total of 38 years. Additionally, Lynn served on numerous committees at Central, including the Church Council, the Property Disposition Committee, the Committee on Committees, and others. In addition to all of this, Lynn loved southern gospel music and was a devoted wife and mother who loved her family and who whole-heartedly embraced her role as a grandmother. She also loved the family trips which took her to Hawaii, Grand Cayman, and Disney, as well as to her favorite places, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
