Msgt. Jorge Mangual, Usaf (Ret.)

MSgt. Jorge Antonio Mangual, age 85, of Warner Robins, Georgia, passed away due to conditions related to prostate cancer on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, at his residence with his wife and son by his side. The oldest of five children, he was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, on December 15, 1936 to parents, Jorge and Maria Cristina Serrano Mangual, and grew up in Ponce where he graduated from Ponce High School. While a senior in high school, Jorge joined the Puerto Rico Army National Guard, and a year following his graduation, he joined the United States Air Force. Upon retiring from the Air Force, he attended Georgia College on the Warner Robins campus, where he earned a BS degree in Business Administration and a minor in Logistics Management.

A twenty year four-month veteran of the United States Air Force, Jorge was a Boom Operator who flew in support of over 400 combat and direct combat support missions in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. He served assignments in Lackland AFB (TX), Shepherd AFB (TX), Yokota Air Base (Japan), Robins AFB (GA), Langley AFB (VA), Wurtsmith AFB (MI), Ramey AFB (Puerto Rico), Kadena Air Base (Okinawa, Japan), and Minot AFB (ND). While serving at Robins AFB in 1957, he met his future bride, Lurene Stephens, at First Baptist Church, Warner Robins. In 1958, he was transferred to Langley AFB, then to Wurtsmith AFB, and between those assignments, he came back to Warner Robins, married Lurene on November 14, 1959, then took her with him to Wurtsmith AFB. Jorge was awarded many military honors including an Air Medal with Six Oak Leaf Clusters and a Combat Readiness Medal.

After his military retirement in 1975, Jorge went to work on RAFB as a civilian, becoming an aircraft loader, an aircraft loader instructor, a planner at wing level logistics, and subsequently became the base deployment officer. He retired a second time, this one as a civilian, in 1999. He also volunteered at Robins Museum of Aviation for 20 years.

Jorge was an active member of Central Baptist Church and a member of the Adult IV Sunday School Class. He volunteered in the Christian Social Ministries Food Pantries for 20 years.

Jorge is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Vivian Lurene Stephens Mangual of Warner Robins; son, Antonio “Tony” Mangual of Warner Robins; sister, Norma Mangual Fritz (Bill) of Tamarac, FL; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death are his parents; son, John Addison Mangual of Warner Robins; and three brothers, Roberto Mangual of Warner Robins, Ernesto Mangual of Coamo, Puerto Rico, and Edwin Mangual of Ponce, Puerto Rico.

A memorial gathering will take place on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home, Warner Robins, at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, with Rev. Stephen Byrd officiating.
