Mabel Grubbs Mccullough

April 5, 1918 — January 4, 2015

Early Sunday morning, January 4, 2015, Mabel G. McCullough, 96, passed away peacefully following a long and fruitful life spent in faithful Christian service. Mabel was born in Monroe County, Georgia, on April 5, 1918, to the late Thomas Edward and Nellie Mae Leverett Grubbs. An outstanding homemaker, she was the devoted wife of the late James M. McCullough, Sr., to whom she was married for 56 years. As a wife, mother, and grandmother, Mabel was beyond compare and she embraced these roles selflessly. Known by many for her cooking, especially those famous biscuits, all those who knew her were blessed by her example of caretaking and love. Her life of service also extended to her church home, Second Baptist, where she had the privilege of being the oldest remaining Charter Member, having joined in 1947. As a member for so many years, she enjoyed involvement at Second Baptist in many capacities. Some of these included serving as choir mother, involvement with the various mission work and the WMU, the church camps and the GA's, membership in the Faith and Harmony Sunday School class, teaching children's Sunday School, and also helping her husband fulfill his duties within the church. Mabel genuinely loved and believed strongly in time spent serving others. She was an exceptional role model with a servant's heart, both at home and for the Lord. Additionally, she enjoyed cooking, gardening, porch-sitting in the swing, many years of camping up at High Falls, and most of all, time spent surrounded by family and loved ones.

In addition to her parents and beloved husband, Mabel was also preceded in death by her step-mother, Cava Neal Sheppard Grubbs; two brothers, Robert and Thomas Grubbs; a sister, Luna Belle Peeples; her son, Jimmy McCullough; a daughter, Nancy Gentry Whittington; and two sons-in-law, Irvin Gentry and Larry M. McNeal, Sr.

Mabel will be missed by a loving and grateful family, including her daughter, Carol McCullough McNeal; daughter-in-law, Gail McCullough; son-in-law, Clarence Whittington, all of Warner Robins; sister, Jeanette Weaver of Jackson, GA; grandchildren, Wayne Gentry (Valerie), Kent Gentry (Laura), Cindy McCullough Gentry (Mark), Cathy McCullough Giddens (Scott), Kelly McCullough McMullin (Kyle), Jill McNeal Adams (Bo), Michael McNeal (Shannon), Tom McNeal (Brandie); 28 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service celebrating Mabel's life will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 in the Chapel of McCullough Funeral Home with interment immediately following in Magnolia Park Cemetery. Visitation with friends will be held an hour prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 pm in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Second Baptist Church, 2504 Moody Road, Warner Robins, Georgia, 31088.
