Marjorie W. Saunders

Warner Robins – Marjorie W. Saunders, 86, entered into rest Sunday, April 19, 2009. Mrs. Saunders was born on November 24, 1922 in Scooba, Mississippi.

On completion of Beauty School in Meridian, Mississippi, she was employed by the premier shop in town, "Frits". She was asked to be the stylist for the star of a movie that was filmed in Meridian. She married her first husband, Elmer D. Jackson, on August 11, 1940 and they eventually settled in Warner Robins in 1944.

She bought her first business license in January 1946 and opened her first shop on Meadowdale Drive; she subsequently moved to Watson Boulevard for a time, before relocating to a new building behind McArthur Boulevard in 1957, and to the shop's current location in 1959. Marjorie's is the oldest business in Warner Robins. One of its operators has been there thirty-seven years. Marjorie was the preferred stylist in town in the 1950s and 1960s. She styled the hair of many an influential lady, both from town and Robins Air Force Base, including our current mayor's mother. She remembered him coming to the shop with his mother as a young lad and playing in the beauty shop. Affectionately called by many as "Miss Margie", she was a loving, caring individual who never thought twice to help someone and never spoke a harsh word. Her close friends referred to her as "St. Margie".

Marjorie and Nathaniel "Hank" Saunders, Jr. were married on March 23, 1985. After her retirement in 1993, they traveled quite extensively in their motor home, visiting forty-nine of our states. Margie enjoyed the motor home very much and was not shy about driving it throughout all her travels, including trips to Mexico and Canada. She also had the joy of flying to England to attend her grandson D.J.'s graduation from York College.

Margie was a member of the Warner Robins Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 6605, as well as the Cosmetology Association. She was of the Methodist Faith. She was predeceased by her first husband, Elmer D. Jackson, parents, Ernest B. Williams and Annie Mae Craig Williams; sisters, Sarah Williams Lavender Woodson, Ruby William Patty, and brother, Ernest B. Williams, Jr.

She will forever live in the hearts of her husband, Nathaniel "Hank" Saunders, Jr., Warner Robins; son, Elmer D. Jackson, Jr. (Dottie); devoted brother, John F. Williams (Elna); step-daughter, Terry L. Wilson (Jeff); step-son Nathaniel H. Saunders, III; seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; aunt, Julia C.
