Mary Mathews Humble

May 31, 1935 — October 7, 2018

Mary Mathews Humble died on October 7th, 2018, just forty-five days after the passing of her beloved twin sister, Elizabeth “Beth” Collins, and seven years to the day since the passing of her dear nephew, Bill Collins. Mary had been ill for several years with Parkinson’s Disease. She was a native of Fort Valley, Georgia, where she grew up and she was the granddaughter of William Asbury Mathews, who introduced the legislation to incorporate the town of Fort Valley. She was educated at Fort Valley High School, Randolph Macon Woman’s College, and Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Mary was a beloved school teacher who taught both English and Math in the Peach County School System. Mary always felt that she was fortunate to have taught under principals Sara Lowe, Norman Faircloth, and Bob McClendon.

A woman with a strong Christian heart, Mary loved reading her Bible. She adored, as did her whole family, attending Indian Springs Holiness Campground and she did so from her teenage years until her illness no longer allowed it. As an English teacher, Mary loved books, never tired of learning, and was known for her ability to beautifully recite poetry. Another of her favorite things was sitting on her back porch listening to the birds sing and the sounds of the passing trains. An animal lover, she cherished many dogs and cats that she had over her lifetime. She loved her God and Savior, her family, her students, and her many friends, including four lifelong friends since age 3: Nan Fagan Evans, Etta Hiley Garner, Sylvia Scarborough Vann, and Marney Hatcher Wagner.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Sam & Evelyn Mathews, her brother Sammy Mathews, her twin sister, and best friend, Elizabeth “Beth” Mathews Collins, and nephew William “Bill” Burton Collins.

She is survived by her son, John “Johnny” Carter Humble, her daughter Mary Hart Humble (Carlos Eduardo Cardenas), and granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth “Lizzie” Cardenas. She leaves nephews John “Jay” Houser Collins (Roya), Henry Asbury Mathews II, Andrew Ludwig Mathews, and first cousin, Margaret McKinnon Mathews. She also leaves several great nieces and nephews: Ana “Maga” Collins Pierce (Richie), William Andrew Collins, Cameron Burton Collins, Nikki Sophia Collins, Kion David Collins, Amber Louise Mathews, Joshua Moore Mathews (Kathleen), and Jerome Samuel Mathews, as well as great, great-nieces and nephews: Austin Lee Mathews, Chase Joseph Mathews, Sarah Wilhelmina Mathews, and Isaac Rhodes Pierce.
