Mona Buckles Degroot

September 22, 1920 — February 19, 2015

Mona Buckles DeGroot joined her beloved husband, Herbert Harley DeGroot, in Heaven early Thursday morning, February 19, 2015. Mona had been in declining health for a short time and passed away in her home among her beloved family members.

Born on September 22, 1920 in Abingdon, Virginia to the late Stanley Eugene and Lucy Brown Buckles, Mona attended business school after high school and moved to Kingsport, Tennessee where she was employed by Mason Dixon Lines and Kingsport Utilities. While working in Kingsport, Mona met and later married Herbert Harley DeGroot, her war time sweetheart, in January 1946. In 1950, Herb and Mona came to know the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Savior together and began a life-long journey of service and commitment to the cause of Christ. In 1955, Herbert, Mona, and family moved to Macon due to Herb's job relocation with the U.S. Weather Bureau and she devoted herself to being a lovely homemaker. Mona was preceded in death by her husband, the late Herbert Harley DeGroot, on February 15, 2011, and four brothers.

Mona is survived by her daughters, Marsha Johnson (George) of Kathleen and Becky Barringer (W. Darrell) of Lexington, South Carolina; grandchildren, Scott Johnson (Lara) of Augusta, Georgia, Todd Johnson (Jessica) of Anderson, South Carolina, Bradley Barringer (Kim) of Lexington, South Carolina, Katie Kitchens (Josh) of Lexington, South Carolina, and Kerri Snipes (Jonathan) of Waynesville, North Carolina. She leaves behind a legacy of seven great-grandchildren and was eagerly anticipating the birth of four more great-grandchildren this year.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, February 22, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home with interment following in Magnolia Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
