Pastor Waldo Keith Mullen, Sr.

November 17, 1927 — March 31, 2017

Pastor Waldo Mullen, 89, entered into Glory on Friday, March 31, 2017.

Waldo Keith Mullen, Sr. was born to Stillman and Helen Mullen on November 17, 1927 in New Brunswick, Canada. When Waldo was nine years old, his father moved the family to northern Maine, and Waldo eventually became a naturalized citizen of the United States. Waldo graduated from high school in Washburn, Maine. He attended college at Bob Jones College in Cleveland, Tennessee, and graduated from the school's new campus in Greenville, South Carolina under the name of Bob Jones University. He received his master's degree in Bible in May 1951.

He took his first pastorate at Second Baptist Church in Cherryville, North Carolina. There, he met and married the love of his life, Audrey Eileen Byars, and they were married on May 16, 1953. They went on to serve Second Baptist Church for the next 10 years and have four children: Cindy, Keith, Michael, and Gary.

In December 1962, Central Baptist Church in Farmville, North Carolina called Waldo to serve as their pastor. Audrey and the children went to visit her family in Blacksburg, South Carolina for a few weeks, and when Waldo went to retrieve his family, he preached at Calvary Baptist Church in Landrum, South Carolina. They were looking for a pastor and later called Waldo to fill the position. Initially, he gave a negative answer, but later reconsidered and accepted the call. In August 1964, the Mullen family moved to Landrum, South Carolina.

In November of 1967, a preacher friend contacted Waldo about a small group of people in Warner Robins, Georgia needing a pastor. Again, Waldo initially declined the offer, but, on New Year's weekend, the church again contacted Waldo and asked him to come preach for them on Sunday, December 31. At the close of the evening service, the church issued them a unanimous call to be their pastor. Waldo agreed to consider it and asked the church to pray with him that he would know God's Will concerning the matter. After two weeks of reflection, Waldo called Johnnie Brantley and told him he would accept.

On February 22, 1968, the Mullen family moved to Warner Robins, Georgia and began 15 wonderful years of ministry at Bible Baptist Temple. Through the years, the church was to steadily see folks coming for salvation and rededication. That first Sunday, there were 60 people in Sunday School; 12 years later, the attendance was 785. In 1969, Waldo and Audrey were surprised to learn there was going to be another addition to the family, and on December 3, 1969, Paul Stillman was born.

In August 1982, Waldo was recommended to a church in the Atlanta area by Dr. Gilbert Stenholm of Bob Jones University. However, it wasn't until February 1983, that he accepted the pastorate of Buford Highway Baptist Church and moved to Lilburn, Georgia. In 1984, Waldo and Audrey's second youngest son, Gary, married Jena, and they have one son, Justin. Gary joined his father at Buford Highway Baptist Church and served as the Music/Youth Director.

In September 1991, Waldo resigned from the pastorate at Buford Highway Baptist Church. After moving back to the Warner Robins area, Waldo met with a group at his son Michael's house on Friday, July 10, 1992, and the very next Sunday, Waldo preached at Trinity Baptist Church in Centerville, Georgia. The church called Waldo to be their pastor in August of that same year. He and Audrey moved to Centerville where they lived the remainder of their lives together. In 1993, their youngest son, Paul, and his wife joined them in ministry at Trinity.

In 1999, at the age of 72, he retired from the senior pastorate a Trinity Baptist Church. He went on to serve as an interim pastor for many churches in the surrounding area including Mikado Baptist Church (Macon) and Grace Baptist Church (Warner Robins). When his youngest son Paul became the pastor of Grace Baptist Church, Waldo served as the assistant pastor as his health allowed. In June 2010, his beloved wife, Audrey, went home to be with her Savior. Paul and his family lived with Waldo after that time until Waldo joined his wife in heaven on March 31, 2017. Waldo is survived by his brother, Wayne, his five children, 16 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren with one on the way, and several rejoicing in heaven with him.
