Philip B. Odom

November 23, 1951 — January 12, 2017

Philip Binion Odom, 65, joined the church triumphant on Thursday, January 12, 2017 after a brief illness.

Phil was born in Macon, Georgia to Marie Patat Odom and the late Marvin Binion Odom. He was a graduate of Mercer University with dual degrees in Business Administration and Criminal Justice. Phil retired from Robins Air Force Base in 2009. At the time of his retirement, he was the Director of Staff for the 78th Air Base Wing. Phil began his career in the PACE Program in 1976 and held jobs in Distribution, Aircraft, Plans and Programs and as the base Executive Officer. He was the youngest person ever to be awarded the Meritorious Civilian Service Award, the second highest Department of Defense civilian award. Prior to his career at the base, Phil served in the United States Navy as a Legalman and upon his discharge in 1975, became a Court Reporter for the Bibb County Superior Court where he was the first certified court reporter in the state of Georgia to serve in that capacity.

Phil was an avid golfer and a member of Southern Landings Golf Club as well as a Mason and member of the Houston Lodge #35. In his free time, he enjoyed coaching Western Little League and reading Civil War history.

The family would like to thank his very special and dedicated caregivers Jackie Lowe and Peggy Allen for their incredible kindness and compassion.

Phil is survived by his loving wife, Melissa McDougald Odom of Warner Robins; Mother, Marie Odom of Macon; daughter, Mary Beth Odom of Macon; son, Wesley Odom (Samantha) of Bishop; sisters, Vicki Akin (Bobby) of Macon and Pam Gates (Tracy) of Forsyth; brothers, Jack Odom and David Odom, both of Macon; grandchildren, Jacob Odom, Gabriel Odom, Emma Odom, Savannah Odom and Riley Mercado; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his beloved pets, Wooten, Weaver D and Mr. Peabody.

Visitation will be held on Monday, January 16, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 303 Mary Lane, Warner Robins, with the Rev. Lucie Perkins and Dr. Michael Castronis officiating. A luncheon will follow the service at Southern Landings Golf Club, 309 Statham's Way, Warner Robins.
