Smsgt Daniel John Slater, Usaf

February 6, 1976 — November 11, 2018

SMSgt Daniel John Slater, USAF, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, November 11, 2018. Born in 1976 in Skokie, Illinois, Dan was the son of the late John Henry Slater and Carla Jean Rhoden.

Dan loved nothing more than spending time with his family. He was the best husband, father, and friend that one could ask for. Dan was known for his hilarious personality and his ability to turn everything into a competition. Almost anything you can think of turned into a “Slater Family Championship”. He was also known to be the “king of useless knowledge” and a practical jokester who kept everyone laughing. He was an avid fan of both the Florida Gators and the Chicago Cubs, who he had the joy of seeing win the World Series. It should be said that he did also have a soft spot for the Idaho Vandals since he brought them up from nothing in his NCAA football video game! Though he would hate to admit it, Dan’s soft spot also extended to his two dogs, Oreo and Magnus.

Dan was currently serving his country as the Superintendent of Nuclear Operations for Headquarters Air Force Reserve Command at Robins Air Force Base. During his nearly 25 years of service, Dan was active in the Global War on Terrorism having served in support of Operation Noble Eagle, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Inherent Resolve.

Left to treasure his memory is Dan’s beloved wife of 22 years, April Nash Slater; children, Taylor Slater, Lauren Slater, and Jake Slater; mother, Carla Jean Rhoden (Jerry); sister, Chrissy Slater (Chris); grandmother, Peggy Sample (Jim); and mother-in-law, Shirley Nash.

Visitation with Dan’s family will be held on Saturday, November 17th, 2018 from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. Services to celebrate his life and legacy will be held immediately following at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Full military honors will be rendered.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations be given in memory of SMSgt. Slater to your favorite charity.
