Sarah Ann Bates Granade

February 24, 1933 — May 11, 2013

Sarah Ann Bates Granade, 80, of Kathleen, passed away Saturday, May 11, 2013. Mrs. Granade was born February 24, 1933, at her grandparents' home in Bainbridge, Georgia. She was the eldest child of the late Mr. and Mrs. K. F. Bates, Senior, and beloved sister to the late Barbara Bates Snipes and K. F. Bates, Junior.

After attending Greensboro College in Greensboro, North Carolina, Sarah Ann Bates married Lt. Napp Nelson Granade, Senior, on July 17, 1955. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Japan with the Air Force and then spent time in Louisville, Kentucky, for Napp's seminary. Before settling in Warner Robins as pastor of Shirley Hills Baptist Church, Napp and Sarah served congregations in Abbeville, Georgia, Columbus, Georgia, and Carbondale, Illinois. After serving as pastor and cherished pastor's wife at Shirley Hills for 26 years, Napp and Sarah ministered to congregations in Gray, Byromville, Pinehurst and Wilcox County, where Napp continues to serve as pastor at Cedar Creek.

As a pastor's wife, Sarah counseled, cared and simply loved the congregations and communities. Her ministry extended into the schools, where she taught English in the Houston County school system for over 20 years until her retirement. Sarah was president of the Georgia Baptist Minister Wives and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma educational society.

Sarah and Napp have four children: Linda Granade Thompson (David) of Tallahassee, Florida; Jeanie Granade Farmer of Kathleen; Kathryn Granade Brantley (Gerry) of Perry; and Dr. Napp Nelson Granade, Junior (Valerie) of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. Napp and Sarah were blessed with nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her beloved sister-in-law, Sally Hawkins Bates.
