Stephen Douglas Elkins

Stephen Douglas Elkins, 65, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his family on Wednesday, December 21, 2016.

Stephen was born on November 18, 1951 in Atlanta, Georgia and grew up in Jacksonville, Florida. He received a BA in religion from Florida State University and a Master's Degree in journalism from the University of Georgia. Stephen did graduate work at Candler School of Theology at Emory University and in special education at West Georgia College.

Stephen loved sports and writing, and while at Georgia, he was managing editor of the university's game day football program and was Sports Editor of The Elberton Star. After working in sports and news for The Statesboro Herald, Stephen and his wife, Deborah moved to Warner Robins in 1984 to become Sports Editor of The Daily Sun. He worked for The Macon Telegraph for almost 10 years as a sports writer and reporter. Stephen served a short stint as a Daily Sun reporter and was Managing Editor of The Herald. At the Telegraph, he was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for breaking and covering the Warner Robins videotape political scandal story. Stephen has received a number of journalism awards, including the award for Georgia's top sports story of 1988 for his analysis of the state's "No Pass, No Play" academic rules. In his retirement years, he wrote a book, and loved politics, history, sports, and rock music.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Julian and Geraldine Elkins, and brother, Michael Elkins.

He leaves his memory behind with his devoted wife, Deborah Edwards of Warner Robins; daughters, Rachel Elkins, Susannah Elkins Posey (Mitch), both of Warner Robins, and Maggy Elkins Aldredge (Zach) of Brunswick; grandchildren, Tate Miller, Levi, and Micah Posey of Warner Robins; brother, Harold Elkins (Roberta) of Jacksonville, Florida; and several adoring nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate Stephen's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 26th in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to the service.
