Veola Dorsey

January 9, 1941 — July 16, 2018

Veola Clayton Dorsey was born in Paulding, Mississippi to the late Lester Clayton, Sr. and Levander Farrell on January 9, 1941. Veola was raised in Gulfport, MS but would later travel the world with the love of her life, Samuel Dorsey, Jr. Veola and Sam, who she lovingly called “Dors,” married June 6, 1964. Sam’s military career took this country girl from Mississippi around the world with three kids in tow; they would ultimately retire in Warner Robins, GA.

While traveling the world as the wife of a United States Air Force service member, Veola worked in many positions. She worked as an office manager, a financial analyst and retired from Civil Service as an item manager at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, GA.

Veola was a loyal member of First Baptist Church of Garmon Street. She was involved in many ministries within FBC, but she was especially fond of her involvement with the Prime Timers. She enjoyed working and traveling with the group.

Veola was a devoted and loving mother. She was extremely proud and unapologetic about how much she loved her family. Her family was very close, because she made sure she instilled those values taught to her by her own mother. She was passionately known to her grands and great-grand kids as “Sweet Nana.” She enjoyed holidays, family get-togethers, vacations and would create events just to spend more time with her family. Family was important to Veola, and she made no qualms about telling anyone who would listen.

Those who knew Veola were affected by her kindness and sweet will. She genuinely cared for all people and was affectionately called “Ms. Ve” or “Momma Ve.” She touched hearts and changed lives with her incredibly infectious smile, her quick wit, and her loving spirit. Veola will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Veola was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Ceola Hughes. She leaves behind her husband of 54 years, her two brothers Lester Clayton (Shirley)(Warner Robins, GA), Thomas Clayton (Eula)(Gulfport, MS), and her three children, Gretchen Young (Lithonia, GA), Bryan Dorsey (Tannette) (Warner Robins, GA), and Sharon Dorsey (Atlanta, GA). Nana will be missed by her eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday, July 20, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at First Baptist Church Garmon Street. Following the service, Veola will be laid to rest in Magnolia Park Mausoleum.
