Vera Inez Denham Merritt

January 21, 1919 — April 1, 2018

On Easter Resurrection morning, Sunday, April 1, 2018, Vera Inez Denham Merritt joined her best friend, Jesus and her beloved husband of 55 years, Jack in heaven. She was 99 years old.

Vera was born in Locust Grove, Georgia on January 21, 1919 to the late Grady Floyd and Abie Cleveland Denham. She attended Spalding County High School and went on to marry her one true love, Jack Merritt, on July 2, 1938. Vera dedicated her life to loyally supporting her husband, raising their children, serving God, and making their home one filled with love and faith. When her last child was of school age, she began working in the lunchroom at Rumble Junior High School and continued serving children at various schools for 10 years.

Vera was also a longtime faithful member of Second Baptist Church where she was loved by everyone. She often won their Mother With the Most Children Present at the Service Award and enjoyed taking care of the church’s toddlers in the Cradle Roll Nursery. Vera served as a ladies’ Sunday School Teacher for over 50 years, and was so loved by the members, that the class was changed from the Lydia Bible Class to the Vera Merritt Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Women’s Missionary Union and loved cooking and serving supper on Wednesday nights until she was 93 years old.

Her memory will forever be treasured by her loving children, Gary Merritt of Sandersville, Georgia, Mickey Merritt (Lynne) of Bonaire, Gale Redmon (Jake) of Warner Robins, Brenda Higginbotham (Bobby) of Bonaire, and David Merritt (Sue) and Carl Merritt (Jennifer), both of Warner Robins; 24 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and her granddaughter, Amanda’s pet dog, “Kenzi Booboo.”

The family would like to express a special thanks for Mrs. Merritt’s caregivers and Compassionate Care Hospice who gave her wonderful care and also to her granddaughter, Amanda Merritt, who lived with her and gave such loving care.

Visitation will be Tuesday, April 3, 2018, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at Second Baptist Church. Afterwards, Vera will be laid to rest next to Mr. Merritt in Magnolia Park Mausoleum.

The family will accept flowers or donations may be given in memory of Vera Merritt to Second Baptist Church, 2504 Moody Rd. Warner Robins, GA 31088 or to your favorite charity.
