Verna Mae Scott

September 18, 1938 — August 8, 2022

Verna Mae Scott, 83, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 8, 2022.

Verna was born on September 18, 1938 in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the oldest of three children born to the late William Robert and Minnie Mabel Todd Buford. While her father fought in World War II, her family stayed with her grandparents. She loved to share her memories of the sheep farm and riding her favorite white horse, “Easter,” bareback, which got her in trouble when she would scatter the sheep.

After marrying the love of her life, William Robert Scott, Sr., she became an amazing military wife and dedicated many years supporting her husband and serving in the Air Force Officers’ Wives’ Club. Verna and Bill loved to play cards and belonged to a bridge club. In addition, Verna was a great cook, and she and Bill put together a cookbook of her favorite recipes.

While they moved frequently when the children were small, Verna and Bill spent 13 years in Michigan when Bill worked at Selfridge Air Force Base in Michigan. They had a great group of friends that they would enjoy spending time with while all the children spent time together in the basement.

When the family moved to Macon, Georgia in 1983, Verna joined the Newcomers’ Club where she made many new friends. Bill and Verna loved to golf locally but also at Hilton Head each year with friends and family. She was always pointing out trees that she liked, and her friends would say she went golfing more for the trees than the golf.

Family was always the cornerstone of Verna’s life. She was an amazing mother and loved spending time with family. She especially enjoyed watching her grandchildren grow up and bring her grandbabies to hold and adore.

Verna was quite the character. She had so many sides to her from loving and kind to smart and ornery. While she could be stubborn at times, she would do anything for those she loved, often putting everyone’s needs before her own. Verna was smart and loved keeping up with technology, playing games on her iPad, keeping up with everyone on Facebook, and watching Fox News and the Game Show Channel. Verna touched many lives and will be dearly missed by all that knew her. Her greatest love was her husband Bill, and she missed him dearly when he passed away. Now there is comfort in knowing she is reunited with her husband once again. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, William Robert Buford, Jr.

Her memory will forever be treasured by her loving children, William Robert Scott, Jr. (Tina), John Thomas Scott (Debbie), and Elizabeth Ann Scott; her grandchildren, Daniel Scannell, Jessica McDonald (Tim), Samantha Mathis (Jason), Leslie Scott (Jenna), Cameron Scott, Trevor Scott, and Dylan Scott; her great-grandchildren, Harper McDonald, Brantley Scannell, Lincoln McDonald, Dexon Mathis, and Hudson Scott; her sister, Patricia Dale Mems (Bob); and a host of other family members and friends.

Verna will be laid to rest next to her husband in Andersonville National Cemetery in a private ceremony.
