William Lon "Dub" Rewis

Early on the morning of Thursday, November 9, 2017, William Lon “Dub” Rewis, 80, passed away peacefully.

Mr. Rewis was born on December 19, 1936, in Scotland, Georgia to the late Marcus and Aurel Harbin Rewis. He was raised in Hawkinsville, Georgia where he graduated from Hawkinsville High School. He was active in football and basketball, and lettered all four years in both sports. He was a member of the All-State Football team his junior year, and a member of the 1953-54 State Champion Football team. He received a football scholarship to the University of Georgia, but transferred to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where he was a player on the 1958 UTC football team that beat the University of Tennessee for the first time. During his junior year of college, he was drafted by the Chicago Cardinals football team. Mr. Rewis was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity and was selected to the Kappa Sigma All-American Team. He was also a member of the Methodist College and University All-American Team.

Mr. Rewis began his teaching career at Notre Dame High School in Chattanooga where he also coached football and basketball. He married his college sweetheart, Judy, at the University of Tennessee—Chattanooga chapel on his birthday, December 19, 1959. Their two sons, Andrew L. Rewis and Robert Mark Rewis were born in Chattanooga.

In 1969, Mr. Rewis moved his family to Warner Robins where be coached football and wrestling at Northside High School for several years. He then became the Driver’s Education Coordinator for Houston County where he taught Driver’s Education for 23 years and provided the driver training and testing for Houston County school bus drivers. He also served as State President for the Georgia Driver and Safety Education Association. Mr. Rewis retired in 1999 after 40 years of teaching and coaching.

Mr. Rewis was a member of Oakland Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was a member of the Young at Heart Sunday School Class. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert “Bobby” Rewis.

His memory will forever be treasured by his loving wife of 57 years Judy Rewis; his son, Andrew Rewis (Alecia) of Jackson, Georgia; and his grandson, Cody William Rewis of Atlanta, Georgia.

Visitation with Mr. Rewis’ family will be Saturday, November 11, 2017, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. The funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 12, 2017, in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Winfree officiating. Following the service, Mr. Rewis will be laid to rest in Magnolia Park Cemetery. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the Oakland Baptist Church Building Fund, 1509 Russell Parkway, Warner Robins, Georgia 31088.
